The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Well my Buckeye isn’t broody afterall—just manages to time her egg-laying with my afternoon trip to the barn. So that’s good. I would be very happy if the black Hatch went broody since I caught her terrorizing a squirrel the other day. I could use more of that attitude.

Still no deliveries here. Gloves were in KC Friday. Expected deliver started as Saturday but now says "by Thursday". No updates since Saturday when it changed to arriving late.
Two other items expected deliveries for Wed and Thurs. No updates on them since Thurs when they had neither made it out of original state.
Anyone shipping for Christmas better get it shipped asap 🤣
Oddly enough I bought something from Amazon that shipped from China expected delivery 4th thru 14th. It made it here on the 4th.
Gloves suck. Everyone has what are supposed to be excellent cold weather gloves but there's reviews that say not warm at all. People have been telling me to trust reviews but....
Waiting on lined denim coat and I found an exact match to the old field and stream lined flannel I had. New, old stock with tags. Waiting on it and it'll be my go to working/chores wear. If it's as good as I remember I'll look for a back up one.
Looking into other glove options and a face gator thing next. Yee Ha
2 decent temp days this week. Seriously decent and they're the two days I work. That's how that usually works.
And yes my hens aren't laying now. Not even a dozen eggs a day total.
I ordered something from an Amazon a couple of weeks ago and they keep pushing it back
The backs are what I mostly noticed, and the stance. They're a pretty bird though, the Ancona. Are they less flighty than the Leghorn?
I can't speak for Leghorns but the Anconas I had were active yet curious and friendly. Not like lap birds but definitely friendly.

I had squirrel problems last year and the year before. They got up under the hood of the Ram and chewed a wire. They also kept getting into the chicken run after the feed and water. I bought one of those squirrel traps, and relocated the whole family one by one. This year I didn't see any of them.

I just lost a chick. One of the little White Leghorns.:hit

She passed away right in my hands. I was studying and all of a sudden I heard a loud distressing chirping coming from my son's room (where their brooder is). I jumped up and when I looked into the brooder the chick was kind of doing the little flop of death. I picked her up and tried to look in her mouth to see if maybe she was choking or if there was something I could do. She stopped moving and wasn't breathing, no little heartbeat. Nothing. I don't know what happened, but I am so sad. She was perfectly fine like 20 minutes ago when I was in the room hanging out with them. Keeping these little rascals in the house so long makes me get super attached to them and they are so sweet. They love to run to my hand and jump into my hand. They love snuggles and enjoy interacting with me. Grrr I hate getting attached to chicks. I don't know if maybe she had her head in the feeder and another chick jumped on her, and her neck got broken? That is the only thing I can think of that could cause such an instant death without any obvious signs of trauma. She didn't have a mark on her and was perfectly healthy. 😭

Why do they just do that!! I moved the exchequers a couple of days go to a grow out pen. Caught them off the roost in the dark with minimal fuss and into a cat (chicken) carrier cage.... next morning I have a dead pullet! No not one of the roosters! A pullet! No sign of damage on it

It’s like they have a mission in life to break our hearts. Its always a pullet, too. Never one of the dozens of roosters you don’t need. I’m so sorry you lost her! I hope your remaining pullets grow out so you can produce more of them! :hugs

I've had the same with cockerels. Sometimes I think it's worse with them since one or two cockerels can go a long ways in breeding pens.
I can 12 or 15 and pick my top two. Those are the ones that stress me to maintain till spring.
Pullets are bad when you have limited numbers.
