The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Home sick w some kind of flu. DH took care of the animals this morning. We usually haven’t had rodent problems, I have a bunch of black livestock bowls I fill every morning w just enough that the chickens eat it all. The one time we got in the negatives all day, the chickens didn’t eat as much, and the next morning I noticed mouse prints in the run. Probably because there was a bit of food left out.

We still have a ton of snow on the ground but it is starting to melt. I hope the two days of 40s and otherwise temps in the mid to high 30s helps to get rid of it for a bit. I also welcome mud.

Oh and one of my leghorn pullets started laying, at exactly 20 weeks.

Oh yes, I can tell them apart now, in fact it's easier than that! The BA ladies have nice big, upright single combs!

Oh, well .... this knee is not cooperating at ALL, in fact it's getting weaker and more painful by the day. But I see my ortho tomorrow so I hope to learn something. I just hope she doesn't order 8 weeks of staying off of it like she did on my other knee last year. That was ... grueling.
Knee surgeries can be rough but definitely keep it moving and keep walking on it to strengthen up the muscles in your leg. Praying for you! 🙏🏻

I didn't think a possum could catch a free range chicken.
They get them at night in the trees. Opossums are mainly nocturnal. If they can get to the chicken they will kill it. Most of the leaner game and game crosses, Leghorns, etc roost way out on a limb so they stay safe. But the heavier birds roost lower and on sturdier branches so opossums and raccoons can get to them if they find them at night. Varmints still haven’t made a dent in my population, merely culling some of the fat old birds I needed to cull through anyway.

No surgery, thanks! Not yet anyway. I'll be getting several weeks of in-home PT though. And they gave me an immobilizer. I think I'm supposed to stay off of it. 🙄
