The most humane way

Do Kosher.

With Kosher butchering, I have heard the a man was butchering a cow, and it was just licking it's face, so, probably pretty humane. you could do some research on it!

Ya hold their feet and wings in one hand, lay their head on the chopping block and chop their head off with a good sharp axe and then turn them loose in the grass or the snow. They will jump around a little but, not much. Have your water ready and you are in business. Good Luck Woody

Thanks all for the responses, DH is going to do the actual killing. I just wanted to find the quickest (for the chicken) way to do it.
Not looking forword to it, but i'm looking forword to the eating them

When my family first ventured into meat chickens I thought about how I would want to be butchered and what would be the most painless to me.
I didn't like the thought of the throat being slit and the blood draining out. I'm certain cutting the throat could be felt. Shooting a chicken in the head would be okay if only I was a good shot and it wouldn't take so much time because I'd have to cut it's neck to let it bleed anyway. We finally agreed on the axe and chopping block method. One good whack and it's over. It's messy but I don't fell it's painful as long as you get it right the first time. Honestly how can you mess up whacking a chickens head off, unless your not looking when you do it

Everyone has there own methods and opinions and I respect them. To each their own

bheila, you obviously aren't as clumsy as me or know someone who is, or you'd know how you could mess it up

I agree that axing would be the best, but I'd probably kill myself or half kill the poor chicken in the process.

I am not good at hammering nails either, if that tells you anything... To you and my exasperated brother: yes, I am looking, okay?

clutzy, clutzy, clutzy I am...

I think the only part that can be frustrating sometimes when you use the axe method is....you don't think you got them on the first whack because their head doesn't fall off. The first time I did it I thought I messed up. Some chickens have such thick feathers on their necks and you don't always cut all the way through their skin on the first whack. As long as you break their neck all the way through your good

Swing that axe hard, on the chickens neck of coarse

LOL You guys be careful, don't chop your fingers instead of the neck!

We send heads a flyin' over here LOL

It is easier (to me, it seems) to get your spouse or kids to hold the chicken by legs and wings down and put a bag or cloth around the chickens head. That seems to calm them more. Then do the deed and drop it into a croaker sack really quick. It does its little death flop in there and is waiting to be plucked n cleaned.

It can be done because I've did it. I was cutting off the last birds head when I stuck the axe in at to much of an angle & only part way cut the chickens neck. This is not fun.

we put ours in the killing cones and all in one motion cut their heads off and let them bleed out, the die quickly and all in all they seem to feel nothing at least not as much as other ways.

must bleed them out all the way no matter how you do it.
