I have a rooster who I absolutely adore. I hand picked him out of the box. He is a calm man. Needs not to excessively dominate the ladies, shares his roost with other males, the flock trusts him. Babysits chicks up to the oldest pullets and even will lay on cold chicks when mama is out. (electricity went out during a snow storm and he jumped the fencing just to lay with the chicks who were peeping because their light had gone out!!) He is the oldest lived i have and is dear dear to my heart.

But conversation has come up that because he is not this Alpha roo personality that attacks and chases and kills the baby chicks, that he is no use against attacking hawks and raccoons and that his genetics are weak. I keep giving away the mean younger roosters that grow up under his wings (literally) in favor of him. I absolutely disagree with their 'weak link' viewpoint on him being not worthy of keeping.

I would like to hear from other fellow owners of sweet roos!

I have 4 sweet rosters and I adore them! They're great to have around and they love snuggles! I would keep him. Where do you live? If you have close neighbour's or live in the city I wouldn't keep him but if you live in the country he would be a great addition. :)

He's a keeper! :) Good ones who respect the girls, respect you, and don't bother chicks are hard to come by. Even the most aggressive of roos don't usually protect a flock from predators, as I've found out.

Out of 30-40 roosters, there's only a single, lone little man who made the cut. He faithfully cares for his favorite hens, plus allows tiny children to play with him. Couldn't ask for a better boy. Take heart, they do exist! :D
