The most popular duck

Interesting, my Pekins were always WILD. Like foaming at the mouth (not literally) wild. I found Muscovies to be much friendlier.

Muscovies and Pekins are common here.

I have 1 muscovy in with my runners and she was raised inside for the first couple of months. She greets me at the gate and lets me pet her and pick her up. She actually likes to be held and the attention. Im still working on getting past the red things growing on her face then lol.

Well then, maybe I will have to give them a chance

I'm sure they will grow on me. Do the females have less red on their faces? I should research them. That's what I'll do

They are suppose to have less but can also have more. Im not sure how it works. I never wanted one but she got pushed on me and i took her and she has turned out to be great! personality wise. Very pleased with the breed if they are all like her. My others you can never get near.

I neither handled my ducklings or chicks. Now, at laying age, the chickens are beggars. 2 tolerate petting, 1 likes it.

My ducks do not care to be touched at all. My older Pekin drakes do talk my ears off and twist their heads when they listen (very expressive).

Most people around here start out with whatever the local feed store is selling and they quickly end up with barnyard mutts. I don't hear about a lot of purebreds.

None of my ducks want to be picked up. All of my ducks are calm natured. The Blue Swedish move away a bit and they keep the most distance away from me. The Appleyards sometimes have to be pushed out of the way, but they don't come up to me. The Pekins are a nuisance, getting in my way, having their heads in the feeder as I am trying to get their feed into the feeder, stepping on my feet.

When the Pekins were peeps, they would walk all over my hands and arms while I was trying to clean their brooder. So it's possible they could have been trained to allow carrying and petting.

Poultry aren't natural cuddlers. Not like dogs, who are raised cuddled against their mother's body or monkeys that are raised being carried and cuddled and hugged by their mothers. Mother birds don't cuddle their young and only spread their wings and let the chickens get under when the chicks are cold. It's not really a display of affection. Good mothers, but a different mothering style.

I think it all depends on how they were raised. Some people don't handle them a lot as babies and they grow and don't want to be picked up. I did a little experiment on 2 different clutches of chicks I had. The first 2 were not handled daily. They were held when they needed to be but not much more than that. Today they are about 6 months old. The roo will follow me and "help" out but doesn't want to be picked up, same with his GF.
The second clutch was held almost daily. I picked them up everytime I'm in the room. Now they are a couple months old and they all want attention all the time.
So your choice in breed isn't going to matter as much as how you raise them.
Good luck making your choice! You're gonna need it LoL

Does anyone know of a duck that does like to be picked up? Or doesn't mind it at least?

We have a lot of kids around that like to pet the chickens and the duck. No picking her up though. They don't fly quite as well as chickens. Found this out the hard way

Well, the only one I know of is a ....... Muscovy

but if you just get like two ducks as babies and play and hold them all the time they wont mind being picked up.

X2 Muscoveys are exactly like dogs, no joke. They even wag their tailes!

I would say my muscovies are the friendliest, I also have pekins and mallards. Also the most popular here is the muscovy and blue/black Swedes.
