The Mystery of the Missing Egg

Something ate it maybe?? I don't really know, honestly. For some reason things like snakes or rodents like eating eggs that a hen is setting on more than the unincubated sort. I've had this happen alot myself.
I haven't seen snakes big enough to eat them often around here (and when I do it's very rare). We don't have rats, so that shouldn't be the cause. We do have mice though (can they eat an egg?) and squirrels. Both of those though couldn't eat a whole egg though. Have you witnessed them eating eggs? or leaving evidence of that happening? Fascinating that they'd be more inclined to take eggs from under a broody than not.

Mice would most likely roll it a way, a racoon could just carry it off as well as a skunk of they aren't protected

I've noticed. She is in a bucket nesting box, there is almost no room for other hens yet they still try to get themselves in. No, unfortunately I don't have a place where she can be by herself. Do you think the other hens broke it and ate it?

I don't know why she couldn't keep it warm; she doesn't have that many eggs. The latter I guess is possible, I thought there'd be more evidence though.
If there's a way to set up a dog kennel in the coop, that would work. She's not going very far from that nest, so it doesn't need to be too large, just big enough for her nest, food, water and a place to stretch her legs and relieve herself.

So, make a new nest for her in a separate cage? What are the risks of her abandoning the eggs?
There is some risk she will be pissed about being moved, but if you cancarefully put the bucket in the kennel and when she comes back and gets on them, shut the door and move her is may mitigate it, I would watch closely though, if it upsets her to much put it back the way she was.

Time to cl9se up any hole bigger than 1/2 inch.
You could get a camera and watch to see who the culprit is. Many here do. The cameras aren't really even expensive. If its a chicken you may need to cull it as they are difficult to get to stop. If it's something else you will know what you're dealing with and can take appropriate measures.
