-The Mythics RP-

Jintao's grip tightened on the dagger's wooden handle and he spun around. Ember leaned against the hull with her usual spunk. "I guess we're even then," he stuck his dagger back into his pocket and fixed his empty sleeve into the other. A quick glance around was enough to see everyone was back to work if they had even stopped.
Jintao threw Ember a smile of assurance before his mouth turned downward once again. Now she was impressed with him. How he wished that mattered to him. Instead, he knew it'd aid in his downfall if the word got out about his past.
Jintao nodded to her statement and followed her as though nothing happened. He'd have to confront his guilt later and somehow calm his stomach in the meantime.

The bustling activity of the ship thinned as they neared the officer's cabins in the aft.
"You seem to have some experience on a ship."
It was more of a question than a statement, and Ember gave him an expectant look behind the words.

Jintao glanced around at the fresh boards which made up the finely built walls. It was pointless to ignore Ember, but such a conversation on his experience was something he did not want to have.
"Perhaps," he said, rearranging his empty sleeve as though it needed it. He peered up at her with his hat's brim nearly hiding his eyes from her view. "And you? You seem like you know what you're doing."
He knew this was her first time on a ship, and possibly the first time being in such a high place of command. His question was more to divert attention away from himself than to collect information about her.

Her steps nearly faltered. Nearly.
"Never commanded on one. But I was an avid study. My caretaker- my guardian. He was an educated professor. A brilliant man. We generally lived simple, but his collection of books was unrivaled, as was his knowledge and wisdom."
She swallowed hard against the growing tightness in her throat, turned sharply with a quick, grounding scuff of her boot as she stopped before the small cabin door.
"Captain's order was for you to share your quarters with Cyprus. Your friend, his apprentice, will be staying with me."
She fought bitterness from her voice, swishing the door open and stepping aside with a flourish of midnight wings.

Ah, book smarts. Jintao hoped his disapproval didn't show on his face. His disappointment reached Vhanya's level. Not only did she not fully examine him before setting him as first mate, she sat this Harpy who had no sea experience whatsoever as a Quartermistress. Books never was the real thing, and as soon as something happened that wasn't written in one, they'd be doomed and Ember's reputation would be forever ruined, not to mention Vhanya's pride.
He bit his tongue. Such a failure could be detrimental to such a fine ship. He wanted to lecture Ember on all the ways she'd destroy this ship, but it wasn't his place to say them now. She'd fail, Vhanya would see her own mistake, and if she was wise, she'd take the harpy out of rank. No, it wouldn't go like that, Jintao was sure. If Vhanya was quick enough to make such a mistake, she was sure enough to give Ember grace until the ship sank as their enemy cheered.
Jintao walked past Ember and stopped in the doorway. Two hammocks rocked like mockery and Cyprus' chest sat judging them. He forced a nod through his tense muscles. "Will do," he stared into the room. "Quartermistress," he looked at her through the corner of his eye. All he could do was attempt respecting her despite wanting to spit on her.
"Lyra," the false name dug into his tongue. "Let her know where I'm staying. We've..." he clenched the weapon in his pocket. He had to get skilled with it if he was going to be anything here. "Got some business to work through. And if you happen to see Nautalis, let her know I'd like to see her as well."
