The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Ok..this will work

get a syringe. mix 1/8 oz of olive oil and 4 drops of red food color. Remove the needle from the syringe and extract the oil and food color mixture. Cover the outside of the syringe with oil.(for safe insertion)
Insert the syringe into the vent all the way and deposit the oil.
In two days you should have some streaks on eggs.

Chelation therapy is done for the two Silkies.
I'm also curious if you've noticed anything different, during the process or after.

I"m back and finally caught up! Lost 3 of the youngest SFH chicks (under the black Silkie) while we were gone
Sorry you lost your SFH. It's bad enough when you're home and I always worry about everyone when I'm gone. Hopefully, warmer weather starts next week as the weatherman promised. Feel better!

Glad to hear that. You said it twice once you even said you were looking for the other hole but did not want to hurt them. So what I am saying is I must have missed the humor. (in Eeyore's voice from Winnie the pooh) OH well not the first time I read something wrong probably won't be the last. (in sponge Bob's voice) LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL.

Seriously now can someone with experience in this help out as to why this did not work. Do you have to stick the bottle way up there. Do you cut feed so the don't poop it out. Whats up get graphic.

For those that don't know what I'm talking about it is about putting food color up their pooper / egg shoot to find who laid what egg.
Pigeonguy - you must know by now that if you want graphic details, you've come to the right thread! lol

I went to Safeway the other day looking for Buttermilk with active cultures, all they had was reduced fat 'cultured' buttermilk. I read the back and it said pasteurized reduced fat buttermilk, which tells me it's not right, right? I should have checked the Commissary yesterday but spaced it till long after I was gone. Where else can I look for it? Baby ducks get here the week of the 15th, so I'd like to start their FF soon.

Quote: You know, I think I will try it.

I'm really blessed to have friends where I can get milk every week so I always have it. I started making cheese several years ago and used to make at least a 4 gallon batch every week. I've gotten out of the habit the last few months but my little "cheese cave" is empty so I need to get busy again!

Since I've had chickens I do feed them some whenever I have it. But the whey from a 4 gallon batch is A LOT OF WHEY (and I only had 6 chickens at the time)! I had started dumping it on the garden and the compost, in addition to making it into smoothies and everything else I could think of since I had so much.

Now I have another thing to try it on.

you can also use the whey to boost your FF -- many folks use whey to start their other ferment projects - pickles, kim chi, etc. I avoid it due to severe milk allergies in my family -- but point is the (unpasteruized) whey is rich in LAB - use like the unpasteurized ACV.

I put Elphaba down. Her body cavity was filled with a clear yellow liquid when I began the necropsy. I think someone else had this issue, what does it mean?

WARNING: GRAPHIC NECROPSY PICS(Click on photo to see bigger view)

L to R:Gall Bladder, Heart, Liver

Ovum cluster(no developing eggs at just over 6mo)

Gizzard

Intestines

Cut open intestine for evidence of parisites, none found

Contents of gizzard

I did not use any meat/organs as the yellow liquid was everywhere.

It was my brother who necropsy'd his chicken and was asking about that. I believe the consensus was that it was the beginning of an ova issue - that if it had continued, the liquid may have become more infected looking.... someone correct me if I'm not remembering right... His was a 3 year old hen that was failing, he culled it to end it's suffering after it had not eaten for a while, and had general malaise for some longer period of time. No parasites were evident. He didn't think to take pictures, but his description was very similar to yours - all the liquid, clear liquid inside. Also there was some thought that the excessive liquid, would have stressed some of the organs - heart I think someone noted???

I am getting excited...two weeks till 10 little ducklings get delivered. Just like our first set of chicks, we ordered a variety of breeds to see if there were some we preferred. Hubby wanted Muscovy, when I told him they were quack less, but I want a noisy bunch quacking everywhere they go.
I have a question about apple trees, if anyone has some knowledge to share...certain types pollinate each other, but if I plant two of one variety, won't they pollinate each other? I want to get a couple Pixie Crunch from Gurneys, but I don't like the other four that they recommend for pollination.
apple trees need different types to pollinate each other. The complication is that the two varieties MUST BLOOM at the same time. You can find pollination charts in any gardening book about fruit trees - nurseries will have them as well. don't know that apple variety in particular - but you may be able to find more suitable varieties locally to you. But don't buy just any apple tree & think it will pollinate your variety - you will likely be disappointed.

Fruit tree pollination problems are often misunderstood by folks. The tree will bloom, then appear to set fruit, then drop lots of little immature fruits. People think they've done something wrong, when the flowers just didn't get pollinated.

And if your tree is an early flowering variety, but the bees aren't active yet - you will see the same pollination failure. Best to check at local nurseries - they will know what is best for your locality.

Also Moxie what steps did you take. Exactly. Did you stick it way up there. Drop it on the outside. Get graphic.
I want to know why this did not work and how to make it work. I have not done it but common sense says it should and I just can't figure out why it didn't.
The picture in my mind is turn them upside down stick the bottle in and squeeze. Don't do that unless someone with experience verifies it Like I said I never done it before

For those that don't know what I'm talking about it is about putting food color up their pooper / egg shoot to find who laid what egg.
