The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I DIDN'T KNOW YOU WERE GOING TO MILK HER!!!! I'm so excited for you :D

My kind of humor

Oh yes!! We want another doe so we can have two milking does :D She is nubian, and from the best milk doe Helen has!
Yes they seem to be taking a swim just noticed them doing the lay down in the water. I use 1.5 gal. plastic water jar. will build up higher maybe this will stop it. Temp is 93 maybe trying to cool off.
They think they are ducks!

I would definitely lower that heat.. have one side of the brooder room temperature or colder if you can. The only heated spot should be out of the way.. where they can go to warm up only..

Did I mention how much I adore my ecoglows??

It's 55 in the basement at nights and Jason's chicks and ducklings (as well as Camille's ducklings) love it. It keeps them nice and toasty and I can sleep soundly.

Thank you Leah's mom I wanted to ask her if she wanted help, but I worried that I would be overstepping. She did put the chicken down and the vet said there was a congenital defect and a swollen liver.

Mumsy, thank you for the reply and the photos. Those are the pvc clips we have and they didn't work for us. The wind kept blowing the plastic off.

I have also heard that the maggots only eat dead flesh and are used by doctors to debris wounds.

Oh and Stony, two indian Runners out of their eggs. Hopefully they will fluff up overnight so I can take some pictures to share.
that's great! Do you know what color the parents were?

last springs newbies under Penelope

hopefully I'll be seeing the same thing in about a month. She is broody again for the last few days

That temp is in one side under light and they have 2'x6' area with no heat. I've done this several times before in same brooder I drop temp 5 Deg. every week.

Thanks everyone for your responses! I have cleaned her up agian and pulled out all the maggots that I could see, then I put neosporine on her. I will do it agian tommorrow and see how this goes. I never noticed a wound on her but like i said she doesnt like being handled.

Leahs Mom....as far as the vent gleet goes I have thought it was that but I am just not sure...I couldnt find any nustock before locally but I will order some. Thanks for the link. What causes vent gleet and is there something I can do to prevent it. The messy bottoms drive me nuts...last year they were all nice and fluffy and pretty and now some of them just look gross....I have wormed them because the vet said it that could be the reason...but it hasnt helped and its been a couple of months now. They said i could send in a fecal sample and have it sent off to see if its bacterial....but what causes it in the first place? I havent done anything differently since having chickens. I will read the "gnarly bunch" story too...Thanks so much!

Hmmm... you might also fill the waterer up with marbles so they have to drink between them and not swim about in the water. If they are able to get into the water, it sounds like it would be a problem - they'll poop in there and you'll have to change it every few hours to keep them willing to drink it. Perhaps some waterers they can't fit their little fluffybutts into would be better?

Gleet is a yeast infection - the discharge is generally white - looks like yogurt or cream cheese all over the vent... but then it picks up dirt when they dust bathe. NuStock works wonders on gleet!

Thanks. I will certainly try your suggestion to see if it will remedy the situation. I really want them all to consume FF on a regular basis.
Your old FF sounds scary to me as well. Is it time to start from scratch? lol    ~Dee~

I also put crumbles on top as suggested by someone on this thread and I do a little scratch grain or seed or meal worms on top as a treat ( make sure they have access to grit) they eat it well now!
