How are you doing? Checked in hoping you were able to update us on your situation. Am hoping you and Susan and all your animals are safe and sound, and hoping for the best for all the farms in the area.

The evacuation was lifted. Three houses burnt down. It wasnt near her though thankfully and Im pretty sure Jamie was not affected but I will leave aoxa to confirm that one 100%. As of now it is supposedly contained but not out.

Also the wind felt like it is going to rain tomorrow so fingers crossed that it will. Its very windy which doesent help for fires
Thanks for updating them Camille.

No Jamie is fine, and his animals are fine. The fire was listed as under control late last night, and I haven't been able to find anything that says it's completely out yet, but I think it probably is.

I knew something was wrong yesterday afternoon, early. I work in Salisbury and could hear sirens like crazy. I was only 15 km from it at that time. I didn't smell smoke there though.

So glad that Jamie is fine.. I'm going to pick up my silkies from him tomorrow.

This was a day ago I'm playing catch up, how do you plan on staking your goats? We also want goats for thinning the underbrush but it'll be a while before we can do fencing. So we talked about staking but not sure how, with goat loving to chew through everything...
It would depend on where the goat was. Haven't given it much thought yet but I'm thinking dog chain. No rope. Metal stake in the ground

Just thought I'd update a little further. Fire is still out of control. There is rain coming tomorrow and the days following so that should really help. As of now no homes are being threatened at the moment, but they have to be prepared to leave at a moments notice.

I love the photo of the babies in the dust!

How long have you been working with your dog before you took down the fence between?
We have babies on the way, we are trying to go natural and I keep picking up things I've never heard of. I've fed my horses DE but never used it for chickens. So you mix it with bran to let the babies dust off in? Is it bran from the feed store like I make bran mash for horses with? Is this a 50/50 mix and can you reuse it or one time use only? And what is the purpose? I know how DE works so is it just for pesticide use? But then what's the bran for? Thanks!

I processed 7 roosters on Saturday. I steamed the backs and wings, and fed them the backs, with wilted lettuce salad. They were so excited! and they played football with their food too! ( oh how rude of themΒ  hahaha)Β  Sunday, they were served chicken wings, alas, the salad was gone.Β  I see no reason to not feed them back the parts of the chicken I am not using. I didn't feed them the innerds, heads and feet, as I wanted to feed the coons and coyotes a long ways from the house.

I thought for some reason you shouldn't give chicken meat to chickens. I don't really know why not just thought I'd heard it. Any reason not too? What about giving them store bought meat parts? Maybe that's what I've heard not to do and home raised is ok? We give our birds bites and bits of fish as we clean them and they get any other kind of meat scraps we have and they go crazy over it. Love to quit wasting the chicken scraps if possible but I don't kill and eat my own chickens just by Purdue ;)
