The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I'm with you there.. I tend to be fine around bumble bees. They are slow and clumsy. I can't help but run when bees/wasps/hornets come around. Less so with honey bees than the latter.

I had not been stung until last summer. I didn't even see it coming. Surprisingly, since being stung - I am much less fearful of them. I do know how useful they are to the planet.. I get it.. But phobias aren't rational right?

Who's ready for June Bug season?!

Oh not me!!!!!!!!!! I'll take all the spiders, love them especially the preditory ones, and snakes you bet they eat all kinds of rodentia, the two insects that scare the begeeses out of me and will get me crying in a fetal postition quicker then anything else are junebugs and grasshoppers( and their creepy cousins the crickets). I even raise and handle dubias (large South American roaches)

I'll take the june bugs and trade you ticks. Already picked off 14 from me so far today. Thats with maybe a half hour outside, wearing big rubber boots, the better to protect, and changing clothes when I came back in and doing a tick check. I have the worse ticks.

I can get ticks just from walking from my door to the car.

june bugs - yucky, but not very many of them and mostly at night! hardly ever on me! no lymes! (I've had lymes 3 x's)

We had a terrible problem last year with ticks... so I bought 7 guinea keets...
They have been hard at work on the farm here since the first of March... haven't found a tick yet.

Curly hair is like a freaking net for bugs!

BDM I'm so sorry about your boy, I hope it's nothing that endangers the rest of your flock. Was he your only Roo?

I lost my roo, Gunnar.

Monday he was fine and today he passed away on the ride to the veterinarian.

Yesterday he became a bit lethargic and disoriented. No respiratory symptoms - clear eyes/nose... but last night the top of his comb started turning a purple/black color... and today he died.

I'm pretty torn up over this, not to mention worried about the rest of my flock... and I won't have answers for a couple days. (These will be the longest couple days in history!)

I took this picture of him on Sunday... picture of health.

sometimes chickens just die. Lemmy guess he was around 10 months old???
