The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

having a rooster does not mean a hen will go broody and the coop will explode with chickens.

Okay, seriously, I like having the rooster boy I have. And I really like hearing him crow. Strangely enough, neighbors on both sides were disappointed that I didn't have a rooster last year because they like to hear them crow. I think it is a kind-of "out in the country" sound that some people enjoy. Feels nostalgic.

One more shipment and I am done. I have an incubator foll of Orpingtons and duck eggs...I was going to take a break, but my DH refused to eat Orpington eggs.

Anyone have a natural way to get rid of the gnats in my houseplants?
pour a cup of bleach in all your sink drains, wipe down all flat surfaces with hot soapy water. Spray plants with soapy water. Set out a glass of wine with plastic wrap on top, poke holes with a pin in it.
I lost my roo, Gunnar.

Monday he was fine and today he passed away on the ride to the veterinarian.

Yesterday he became a bit lethargic and disoriented. No respiratory symptoms - clear eyes/nose... but last night the top of his comb started turning a purple/black color... and today he died.

I'm pretty torn up over this, not to mention worried about the rest of my flock... and I won't have answers for a couple days. (These will be the longest couple days in history!)

I took this picture of him on Sunday... picture of health.

Hugs to you..so sorry hun

Stony that would make for a great alarm sound on my phone ............or I wonder if I played it for my girls ey would respond ? Lol

I lost a girl a few weeks ago, was out most of the day with a school trip and when I got home I went to the coop to start chores, and open the run to let them free range, and collect eggs. She was in a nest box, and I thought she was laying a late egg. I left her be a few minutes, and opened the box again and pet her, and she was stiff. When I lifted her out, her head slumped down, she hadn't been dead too long. I noticed her comb was dark just like his. I inspected her as much as my inexperienced self could see was her vent was prolapsed a bit, but I wasn't sure if that caused her death. I felt along her keel bone, and the feathers seemed to just fall out with me doing this, and the thing I noticed was a lot of blood under the skin. I guessed it was either some sort of heart failure, and hemmoraging, or the prolapsed vent. I wondered if the vent pushed out as she died? i have no idea.. but guess how old she was .... 10 months old...

here she was before she died, and how I will remember her..

Aww... she was a sweet-looking girl!

That is pretty ironic. Sad though.

I don't want to believe that the neighbour intentionally didn't tell, although I think (judging by your post) you don't feel they would do that intentionally. If it did turn out Gunnar ate some bad feed/mice then I would let the neighbours know about it for sure.

Either way, might be good to take some precautions with your current chickens. Maybe keep them in their run a couple days till the mice are done with.
My neighbors aren't animal people at all and wouldn't have known to tell me. Also, my chickens are supposed to be in a 3 acre fenced area, but my SFH are very intelligent and don't care for borders. They know how to get out and back in by wriggling under the permanent wire cattle fence. We've tried filling in their little spots, but they will actually dig stuff out of the way to get out again.

I've gone through and sprayed all the windows twice today, poured vinegar down the sink drains (bleach makes me nauseous) and sprayed all my plants as well. Huge reduction so far, hopefully if I do this for a couple of days they'll be gone for good. I'm trying to figure out which plant brought them in, but since I usually re-pot them its more than likely the dirt I used.
