The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

"Oh Amber you did not bring her ANOTHER chicken!!!".
Aren't all patient hubby's the same? In last year's hatch I bought 3 - 2 day old silkies and stuck them in with my own. DH never knew the difference. Patient, maybe, but continually say "No more!" Funny story, thanks for sharing.

I am so jealous of all the little chicks. After my hen jumped nests, I've left her again. I pulled all eggs out but 3. I'm giving her a 2nd chance. Sue

. A good broody is an impressive thing to watch. This is daughters 3rd brood oft the year. I see her being like her mother "Mama" and pretty much living to raise lil ones.

That's what I'm talking about! Good broody skills are passed along. This is why I don't keep bad ones in my flock. I totally agree. A good broody is an impressive thing to watch. Nice!

I had put some peat moss down in our dusting area and they all went nuts for it. Not sure what's in there that attracts them. I've heard some folks say not to use it due to molds so not sure about that but they DO like it!

I think I'll be adding some pumpkin seeds and garlic next time to my jcakes. I found that my kiddos don't really go for the beef suet base but they LOVE the lard based ones. I can get lard from one of the butchers in our area that gets their meat locally from farms that don't use meds or hormones so I feel like it's at least a little bit better shot at getting some good fat. (I also got my suet from them). I had made a bunch of the suet ones so I've been putting those out on my wild bird feeder.

I'm thinking that I want to make one in the spring so I have a second area for brooding or breeding or quatantine, etc. Well done! Can you tell us how you used the tposts? It looks like you didn't do a wood base but just used the posts in the corner for anchors? Could you expound on that and perhaps take another photo showing the posts up-close and how they're used?

Welcome aboard! Good to have you!

I heard about using peat-moss as the sole litter for feather foot breeds many years ago from a breeder in the UK. Because it is dry and so fine. My show pens are at eye level so I never used it that way for the dust issues in my face that would cause.
Mold has never been a problem for my barn in the litter except the good molds you normally get in DL that helps to break it down. Also, I like to fork my DL once a day while the birds free range. I do it because I like to. That extra oxygen and fluffing keeps everything dryish and the good bacteria percolating.

About the lard v suet. What ever floats your chooks boats is my opinion. The silly chickens do have taste preferences. That's a fact.

All we did with the six foot t posts was drive them in the ground 52 inches apart. Bent the panels over and used heavy duty fence staples to secure the bottom part of the panels to the 4'x4' wooden back fence posts. Then we used zip ties to hold the panels to each other and the t posts. Couldn't be easier.

Thank you. I'm glad to be amongst cheerful, helpful folk. This is a nice thread going here. I enjoy reading it and when or if I have something useful to add I'll pop in on occasion.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! I wrapped DH's present in the old incubator box and when he opened it he started laughing. He thought i got him a new incubator for Christmas. It gives me ideas for Fathersday.

LOL! Was he happy about it or not so much?

My daughter got an incubator and my son got the egg turner that goes with it - LOL. Not a high dollar unit, but they're thrilled with it!

I'm glad to hear that about the peat moss. My kiddos LOVED it in the dusting box and I think I'll continue to use it.

I really like using the posts for anchoring the hoop - especially if you're going to leave it in place for awhile. I think that would be easier for me than building a wood base frame. The wood frame seems like it would be good for dragging it around to a different place if you were so inclined.

He thought it was funny. He has a wonderful sense of humor and probably would prefer we purchased presents for our selves and exchanged them. One year for DD's birthday, he purchased golf clubs for her DS. For his birthday he gave DD extra money for when she went to Hawaii.
