The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

not cream legbars, here is one of those chicks - this is the only one I am confident is a cream legbar. I have one maybe chick.

this is a pullet, even though it is kind of a rooster stance and look at those legs! but the chest is the tell-tale creamy reddish color and the neck feathers are the cream part.
If it's not a SFH I would say it's a mutt

I'm having a really early hatch with these Barred Rocks. Today is day 18. I have 5 external pips and one hatched. Then there are the silkie eggs that aren't ready for internal pip, yet alone external pip.. What in the world.. Anyway.. Chick looks full term and is chirping up a storm. They weren't supposed to hatch until Sunday!
That is really early..might want to double check your thermostat...
what the heck is it?

Lala...its a chicken..

honestly it looks like a very light colored Crested SFH

I need help, I had 19 chickens, 8 weeks and 19 weeks, I was an idiot, I'll deal with that later. I should not have left them to free range while I was gone, such an idiot.

Please help!

Lynn,

I am really sorry..what a horrible thing to happen. There is nothing wrong with anything you did. Your chickens should be able to free range. You did nothing wrong. The owner of the predator did.

Take a breath..

Do an assessment of your chickens. Examine them. The ones with no wounds, keep them together to keep warm
Treat the wounded first..
Clean them up the best you can, cover all wounds with NuStock or salve you have on hand for cuts.
Talk to them and calm them
Call the police
File a report
Press charges
If you know who owns the predator..go talk to them and inform them that you kill predators and they need to replace all chickens lost.
Please keep us informed.

You did nothing wrong...
Quote: OMG - I'm so sorry this has happened.
Irrigate the wounds with clean water. Use hydrogen peroxide where blood has dried up and clumped to loosen it. Don't use hydrogen peroxide inside a bleeding wound - it acts as a blood thinner and can make the bleeding worse.
You can stop the bleeding on small cuts and puncture wounds with corn starch after irrigating/cleaning.
Use Neosporin, NuStock or any other ointment with antibiotic properties that you have on hand.
Wrap any bad/gaping wounds.
Birds in shock need to be kept warm and in a quiet place - check on them regularly.

Please update us when you can.
Good advise

Del, it's right on 100. Silkies, NN and EEs all not even full yet. My humidity in the basement is high. No water at all in the incubator, but it runs between 30-40% I am confused. This is the only time this has happened to me, and it's all from the same breeder.

I mean.. I knew it was early for internal pip yesterday - day 17, but it hatched out completely within 24 hours of internal pip. Normally I have a few early birds that hatch the day before, but never 3 days before.

I thought that development after 48 hours showing the heartbeat like it did was weird. Mutant chicks!

I had a day 18 hatch once during the spring a few years ago. A few Sumatra's hatched on day 18. Usually the early ones happen on day 19 for me. I never did figure out why. It only happened once. I woke up, turner still on and 4 chicks hatched. Weird.

here is what I was thinking of- I copied this from another thread. sorry for the confusion.

Speaking of pre cooked eggs.
I had a friend who's broody was going on day 40 of nesting. She lost a ton of weight and refused to break her brood. I gave her eggs I had in the incubator that were on day 18(4). They hatched today. I drove 2 hours to meet at a mutual friends and she drove an hour home. Those eggs were not incubated for over 6 hours, scrambled a bit with my driving, and I am sure with her driving. I just had them in an egg carton...It was an experiment. I had no idea how it would work out.
