The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

x1000 - I'm on 4 mostly wooded acres and have lots of saplings to thin out

And Mumsy - already subscribe to your garden thread. Hope it doesn't move quite as fast as this one

You all are very kind. It's moving fast today because my brain is chugging out a life time of knowledge as fast as I can type. Trying to break up my ramblings into some kind of coherent format. Sharing my knowledge of plants to discourage deer and rabbit browsing. Spending a lot of time scanning old paper photos. They are reminding me of a lot of plants I used to grow and forgot about.
I'm afraid I'm probably one of the biggest culprits of moving threads quickly. When something gets me going, I tend to focus intently on the subject.

I just found the "The Road less traveled" thread. It's fascinating and addicting. I'm about 10 pages in. It will take me (father of six [soon to be seven] and worker of 60+ hr workweeks) a long time to finish the thread. I'm going to because, well, it's fascinating.

My question is did be ever write her book? I'd buy it in a minute.

Also who or what on earth is responsible for her departure from BYC?

Nice and direct questions. Getting right to the point. I admire that.
I don't know much about Bee. I have gathered that religious views were expressed when they were not asked for. I'm not sure this had any part or not in her break. I never actually came right out and asked about her, just read some of the posts here that mentioned tidbits.
I did see that she has posted recently so I don't think she is entirely gone from the website.

She occasionally posts on the "Delawares From Kathyinmo" thread and "Fermented Feed" threads sometimes. She has mentioned her Gnarly Bunch occasionally.

I have some new pictures of the free ranging Cornish X at 3 weeks old. Delisha - I am so loving the free ranging! They have FINALLY started putting themselves to bed when it's dark.

They are doing really well, and getting big. Some are almost fully feathered, and some hardly have any feathers. It seems the fatter ones are less feathered. They get fed twice a day still. Morning and evening. They act starved when I feed them.. Too bad so sad. I can see they are growing, and I know they aren't dying ;) I want to cut the morning feeding soon. They eat what they can in 30 minutes and it's gone.. so really it's not a huge feeding. Just enough to fill their crop. They are out hunting for 9 hours before getting fed again.

Cletus is always with the chicks.. The heritage BRs have shunned him LOL. He is so cute, and the only boy from the basement babies I will keep. Phoenix attacked my two year old cousin so will be butchered with Randy when we do the Meaties. They don't bother us at all, which is why we are waiting. If I had kids they would be dead NOW.

Cletus is a good boy.

The group when I tossed down some fermented scratch grains.

Can I PLEAAAAASSSSEE have some dinner?

An old cut down tree and brush that the chicks ahve made into a jungle gym. Gives them nice shade in the heat, so I am leaving it be.

Look how feathered this one is!

One of the Pennies (Red Sex Link)

Ooo warm sunshine.

Now some of the Silkies:

Some of the Easter Eggers:

and this random chick I have no idea what it is.. Supposed to be an EE, but is beardless, has a rose comb, and is much bigger than our regular EEs.

I thought maybe Chantecler with the wrong colour legs... but probably not. He does breed Chantecler though.

The goats and Lunchbox:

Justine, I'm always so happy when you post pics! give me chicks and kittens any day.

I enlarged the chick pen, doubled the space because they have removed every little bit of green anything in the chick run, and have taken to eating milkweed. It had thick tall grasses just 3 weeks ago. I do dump weeds/greens etc in their run but obviously not enough. I can't make it any bigger unless I roof it to hawkproof it - there is a reason there are no bunnies or squirrels here.
Just finished picking blueberries when a bear rambled through.

Thanks! :)

I'm embarrassed to admit that I mowed our entire yard JUST for them. I raked up the grass and fed it to all the penned birds and dried out the rest for bedding. They don't like the grass too long or it's hard for them to eat. It grows fast..

A BEAR?!

Justine,

Your free rangers look so good out in the yard. They are very fat and healthy looking. They do not need more feed. You are feeding just right for them and you. They probably could do with out the morning feed but you will worry to much.Great job! They will be tasty lil treats.

The pictures look so good.
