The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Hey all! Excited to find this thread! I have 4 11 wk old chickens right now. I started them all on homemade soaked feed and they are doing so good! I am about to leave town and was stressing on time to go buy the grains to make more food when I found good food at my local feed store (finally!!) So if you have a russel feed store in your area (mostly a north texas chain i think) they are now carrying soy free non gmo feeds! Yea!

Some people need to think if you can't or won't type something nice, then skip the typing and post a pretty picture instead. I'm sure most of us prefer to look at a picture of a new chick instead of reading negative ranting comments.

Look what my Orp-O-Bator hatched out today. Two bantam Salmon Faverolles and a Buff Silkie from my breeding pair. Still have a Leghorn bantam egg under her. Two of those hatched but died soon after. :(
That's fantastic Trav! Congrats! I had to squint to make out that Buff Silkie chick. Amazing camouflage. My bator is on day twenty one and no pips. Three broodys on Silkie eggs in the barn. These will be my first real efforts from the Sheryl Butler and Karen Larson strains. This batch will be my own strain. You and I have certainly have had our fair amount of challenges to get chicks from those first birds we bought last Fall.
I know, right. I also have a Blue pullet that may lay her first egg today. And Marsala tried a quick squat for me today, so may get an egg from her soon.

That's great you have a soy free non GMO feed available locally. I'd love to see pictures of your youngsters. Umm... Texas is a long drive from Washington so I'll pass.

Hey I really like the thread but I need some help. I don't have chickens yet but when I do what is the best bedding and what is some good feed for 4 to 6 week old laying hens.
