The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Good morning everyone..Happy New Year..
I still only have two pips..they hatchling is running around like crazy all alone
I wonder why the rest of them are not hatching
How long did you keep the lid off to take the picture? Everytime I have opened the bator during hatch out I have delayed chicks breaking out. I hope in the next 24 hours you have a bunch of peepers.

Hey, it is really cold here - 12 below, with 30 below windchill. Sun morning I noticed some of the older hens coming out but not eating as is normal first thing in this morning. Didn't see morning with them yesterday, but this morning it is a repeat. They are huddled on the dl in the coop, not interested in eating. Could this be a cold thing? I usually try to keep the coops no lower than zero , but have not used any supplemental heat this year. Half the flock is outside, ate normally, and are grouped in a hay bale corner for wind protection. same behavior, except they ate and drank.

No other signs of unusual behavior.

Am tempted to get a light going to see if I can bring it up maybe 10 degrees.

Just make sure you follow protocols for any normal new bird. Make sure you do not put her and your other new birds with any other bird for two weeks.. than after two weeks.put one of your birds in with the new birds for two weeks. If every thing is all good..you can let them live together.

Thank you! Yes, she's doing a quarantine right now :)

I hope everyone survived the night. I am a bit sleep deprived, I still only have the two pips. I know taking the lid off for pictures for the contest will make a difference,,but sheesh, come on already!! That poor peep is going crazy. It is huge and needs to come out of the bator. I am worried about it burning an eye on the heating element.

it is about -15 here today. Inside it is usually 0 in the coop no matter how cold it is outside. It will be ok..
