The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

We lived in Lake Mary from 72-76, there was a racetrack that used to race QH's but was a Harness track at that time. My best friend teaches jumping. I've barrel raced in the past & want to get back into it since I've retired from jockeying :)

You would be a natural with all the jockey experience. There was just a article in Barrel Horse Magazine about riders that started as jockeys and are now pro barrel racers and they explained the differences and likeness of the two sports.

Well - so far I just call him "Mister" or "RB" or Rooster Boy.  I like lots of those ideas.  I guess I better get at choosing!

So my hen Mole Negro broke her keel bone about a year ago. She has recovered and is fine ..... Just a little zigzag now when you feel her keel. The one thing I have noticed is she will go in the nestbox spend a good hour or two and then there will be no egg. One time in the garden she looked like she was squatting to take the biggest poo ever. Nothing came out soI thought oh no she egg bound I've gotta keep an eye on her .... So I watched and 20 seconds later there was an egg on the ground !!! There was an egg in the run this morning (hers) and I have found them in various places but usually the nest box. Do you think the broken keel affected her egg laying feel .... It's like she thinks she's laid so she leaves the nest & then later thinks she's pooping and an egg pops out. Hmmmmmmmm.......

I wonder if she has to change her "stance" since the break. You know how sometime if something is broken you favor it and stand and move differently?

Anyhow, was wondering if she can't get into "the position" when she's in the box but can when there's no box?

Keep the winter ideas coming! I'm taking a few notes of things I want to do
caf.gif

I have two roos right now (just rehomed one)

Oreo, our EE head roo, named before I realized he was going to have red colored feathers too.

Jaxom, named b/c one of his litter mates was pure white and named Ruth, any Anne McCaffery fans will get the connection

Our araucana boy litter mate to Jaxom, his name is Little man since he was the smallest boy we had, in his new home he is Big man or Manny for short.

As far as winterizing plans, ours are simple, close the shutter walls, and cover the door window w/ a piece of fabric, make sure the water heater works.
