The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

What about hair type sheep? I don't want to be bothered with wool. I am allergic and could hardly pet our sheep without breaking out into hives on my forearms.

.
I've milked a few... not worth the wild temperament and/or very small amount of milk... hardy little buggers though.

Are ya'll tired of guardian puppy pics yet?
This little guy wants to know if he can graduate from being with the hens to roosters... I think not...
I assured him that Buzz would be the "you know what" out of him... which is why Buzz spends his days in his "daytime crate"

He is awaiting this year's slaughter day...

I had slaughter day today..
The two birds that did not cut the mustard at the show and one silkie with a crooked back and my beautiful AM with too long legs..I should have butchered out two pinched tail pullets today too but after I killed the AM I was done for the day. That was a hard one to do. I have never killed a bird before just because its legs were too long. It will make a nice meal and I will not have to worry about it popping into my lines down the road...It was still hard to do. He was a sweet bird and followed me around like a dog.

so sorry to hear it - I am about to do a cull in the next 3 weeks of about 6 roosters and 1 Narri turkey - I almost hate it when they behave so friendly and follow me around. You are way more experienced than I but it never gets easy does it?

aw, delisha, that's hard. I also have to butcher 6 roos in two weeks. I have 5 picked out and I keep telling them, "you're gonna be dinner" just so I can try to get used to the idea. so far, its not working.

redridge, that is adorable.

Thanks everyone..some are just harder to do. It never changes threw the years. Culling a flock for heath and keeping to the SOP is a choice I make. Those pinched tails need to be done. I know other people would find homes, but, I know from experience pinched tail leads to problems with egg layers eventually and I will not give that problem to someone else.
