The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I'm pretty bad at figuring out the type of hawk I have but I think it might be a red tail.
I'm not that far from you and I have seen 2 cooper hawks but that was last season. Last season and all this year I have seen lots of red tail hawks everywhere. They fly over sometimes quite low. Yesterday I think they were watching our new puppies that are already larger than our barn cat by a hair. One even got lower than the roof on our 2 story house. I had all of the chicken in our covered pen so I was not extremely annoyed at the hawk but I still don't like them that close. I also see them when we are out driving in our car miles from my house. Right now there might be a few more than normal due to migration but I have seen them most of the summer too. Yet I still had my birds free ranging most of the summer too. Just lately I have them penned due to my schedule and not wanting to catch them before I leave.

I just saw one this morning at work, flying low going down behind the side of the building. There's a grass strip there with trees and the birds hang out there. He was after I bird.

I found this site and they seem most similar to the red tail or broad wing. I know their call...I'm going to look to see if I can find a site where you can listen to the calls. That would probably give me the identity.

I listened to every hawk on there and it sounds most similar to the red tail.
I used that site a while ago trying to ID my hawks ... I know their call... boy do I. I'll have to listen again as the call that was my hawks ... I wasn't so sure was the hawk I have seen. WELL Yesterday while supervising free play time in the yard.. I heard the Hawks for a long time... my usual hawk calls and a few different calls ... I didnt see them for awhile and then 3 hawks flew over and were circling a few houses down from me.... I watched them and thought yeah they are trying to plan their attack.... Well then to my surprise I realized there were 2 small hawks and one HUGE hawk.... the 2 small ones seemed to be attacking the larger one... Hmmmm any thoughts on hawks chasing off other hawks??? Guess I'll start reading up again....

The children are great at watering my back yard. They are still young enough that they sometimes get to busy to make it inside on time. I caved and rather than clean an accident I point them to an area around the run that wasn't used recently.

We also get the great horned owls. I was dreaming that the owls would eat the hawks but I have not seen that happen. It is so nice to have the meanest hawks and owls in our area. At least I have not seen the owl in a few weeks.

Very, very slowly. I am always stepping on feet lol

Just love your photos, aoxa! You have such a good eye!! Glad I'm not the only stepping on feet...it's usually my 2 Sizzles unfortunately!

Shuffling is better than stepping on toes. It works with chickens, puppies & all sorts of other swarming critters. XD

LOL Quailsong! That's how I enter the bedroom each night due to not knowing which animal is sleeping on the floor.

Wait till you have kids!"

Exactly!! "Mom, my shoes are too tight!" "I just bought those shoes a few weeks ago!!"

I know that crows will attack hawks. And yes, unfortunately, I have heard that they will go after other hawks. Just don't remember which ones I read that about.
Yeah I LOVE my crows and have seen them chase the hawks away ... but these were definitely hawks .... gliding along and calling to each other.... I really need to learn how to ID all these Hawks!!!
