The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

That video of the guy supposedly removing the eyeworm is a bit of an urban legend. He more than likely is removing solidified pus from the eye of a chicken with coryza or some other respiratory disease. People on the emergency thread are all the time thinking their chickens have eyeworm. It is rare, and mostly in southern states, and comes from eating a certain kind of cockroach. Chickens who have it have extreme itching, and will literally scratch out their eyes. There is not a lot listed about treatment, but one person has treated it by applying Valbazen diluted with water in the eye. Here are some links for info:

Well...I have no idea about eye worms since this is the first I've heard of them. I did hear the guy on that video say they were from cockroaches and he also said that the really tiny string-like thing that came out after the first glob of infection was probably the worm. He was saying that both the big globs were infection. Not the worm.

Anyhow...I haven't heard of them before at all.

He also said in the description that it went away with wormer in the water and the removal of the infection and worm itself.

When I read the one document that you posted (Eggcessive) it said there is no treatment for gape worm. But I have heard of people treating and having recovered birds. Which is true? Is there a treatment that can be used or is it untreatable? Is it possible that some birds just overcome them on their own or is it the wormers that were used?

Always wonder about gape worm since it's not intestinal.

Which document was that? I just linked a video for showing gapeworm in Lala's thread. Dawg53 is the one who diagnosed it. He posted this link about Levismisole treatment for 3 times over 10 days to treat gapeworm by someone named CoveyWisePlantation in post #13: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/637690/eye-worm-or-just-an-infection
