The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I simply adore my daughter..she is the nicest person I know. I still love to hug and snuggle her. She still trys to crawl into my lap on occasion when she has a strong need to be mothered. She is 35..lol

I am waiting for news to see if she is PG..her and her domestic partner went last month on my BD (for a present)to the sperm bank. She called me from the bank and said..Happy Birthday...guess what I am doing..

Susan and I are in the beginning stages of trying. I had all my blood work, and we are waiting on a dye test to be scheduled. After that, we have to find a donor.

Yesterday when I let our cockerels out to range around the yard, they honed in on the one tansy plant we have in the garden and took their dust bath under it. I have to wonder if it's because of it's bug-repellent properties. Has anyone else noticed this attraction to tansy?

Just called the local butcher and found out that they keep back parts of beef liver that are considered "too tough" for their customers. I'll be getting it for .50/lb

That's FIFTY CENTS a lb.!!!!

They also have what they call "bone dust" from their meat saws. It collects in the saw and is a mixture of bone dust (like saw dust) and meat that they mix together with the meat that is in the head of the grinders. The meat in the grinder heads can only be thrown out or repurposed into animal feed. I'm going to take a look at that also, for .50 lb.

Oh...the rest of that post is...

Try calling your local butchers! You never know what you might be able to get for a good price.

This is the butcher that only buys meat from local farmers that do not use hormones, antibiotics and the like. Probably a lot of them still have gmo feed, but it's a good start knowing that they're not in feed lots on factory farms, squeezed tightly, struggling to stay alive with an overload of antibiotics.

And...it's cheaper than fish meal although not dehydrated.

Awesome :)

We are really fussy on our pork and poultry we buy at the farmer's market - but beef here is almost always pasture raised. I do make sure they aren't imported from out of province though.

Good find!

Chicken liver is gone really quickly here. They get it back right away lol.

The dogs are already out of chicken feet and hands. Need to process the next batch.

Some of the old poultry guides talk about bone dust and bone scraps for the chickens. sounds great. I think there might be a butcher a couple of towns over....will check. I haven't found beef liver except packaged frozen from illinois, no one is butchering they are just getting their meat prepacked or something.

lala -
Can you list some of the old poultry guides that you've read, own, etc.? I used to have a list that I wanted to eventually read or skim through...maybe I can find it again. But if you have any that you liked please list them.

Also - anyone else that has any of the OLD classics (meaning - way back when chickens were still being given meat and bone meal...before the marketing of soybeans).
