The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

The coconut oil is high in lauric acid (spelling?) and is anti-fungal. Seems like it would be great if someone was trying to treat sour crop instead of using other oils.

hmmm I like the molting pity party idea. Let's see your photos!

(I don't have any right now...oh the indignity of having your photo taken in such a state

If you asked me a month ago I could of sent some really ugly girls and boys. They are almost done now. I will snap a few of the naked mom and chicks..I have three moms with baby's. Two moms are all done moulting and one is almost done.

I don't remember if this came up here or on the 'other' place... about the skin of mold growing on top of FF...

years ago when I raised fish, i'd have a small tank with newly hatched fry in it that would get a thin layer of gunk on the surface, which could impede oxygenation of the water, so a sheet of paper laid on the surface then drawn off usually worked wonders for clearing the surface...

thought i'd try that on my FF bucket this morning (with a strip of newspaper). worked like a charm. my bucket once again has a clean surface. so I highly recommend trying it, if you have problems with that grey film on the top. use only dry paper, draw it across once and throw it away. don't try a second swipe you'll just put the gunk back in.

LM I typed a response to your first aid check last night but my iPad decided it didn't like it and quit just as I was going to hit submit! Boooo!!! Anyways, I said LOL at the through exam & how cute you are doing that..... Is this your first year with hens that are molting??? Mine have been doing it I stages although my 2 Marans lost all their tail feathers overnight so it looks like everyone wants to join the molting party these days :) my girls are really antisocial when they molt and often come out of the coop well after everyone else & then go hide in a corner. Holding a pity party for 1. After about a week they start to feel a little better and start to join in regular chicken activities but only for a few mins at a time. Then they go back to their pity party.... They really don't like to be handled when they are molting so I figure this extends to fighting for food.... Especially favorites where there are chicken stampedes!

As for your bumblefoot ..... Nugget had bumblefoot before the eye swelling. Never looked swollen or infected and the scab was starting to come off. I had been told to soak her feet twice a day in Epsom salt & try to encourage the scab to continue to come off. I asked about ointments & wraps and was told no. Well, nugget is the only chicken who does not relax in a nice warm spa bath!!! It was such a struggle and she was so unhappy that I decided it was better to take the wait and see approach. Well, when we were just at the vet she looked at nuggets feet and poked the scab and it came off!!! It took its own sweet time a good 6 weeks but she's all healed up now!

Aoxa - is that chicken for real or a photoshop?

KI - it was another place where we were talking about the kahm yeast that grows on top of ferment from time to time (mistakenly called "mother" by some folks). But I can post the photos here too if you want.

No it's for real. I believe it won the worst molt contest on BYC last year for the frizzle category. The frizzles molt so bad they get their own category in the contest.

I've had molt before. Just NEVER saw ANY chicken refuse to eat meat....under any circumstances.

For me, that is a warning sign that there may be a bigger issue.

Oh...and I'm "hands-off" on bumblefoot unless I see infection.
