The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

You could also try some regular human antibiotic ointment if you have some (without added pain reliever). Or a little lavander essential oil on the wound if you had any around.

Agreed, coconut oil or triple antibiotic without pain relief ("plus"), do not stitch a puncture wound. Give polyvisol or electrolytes if you have handy, or water with molasses or sugar added, to combat stress. Keep quiet and calm. Best of luck to you, sorry this happened.

Ok thanks for your replies, so far he still holding on, the bleeding has stop, I hope he does not start to bleed again tomorrow after I clean to put the antibiotics.
He is a bit wobbly but can walk, so nothing is broke, he turns his neck nice witch is good as well.

Looks like everybody is offline, I need some advise.
I just came form putting my chickens and duck to bed and I catch the barn owl attacking my pastel call duck, as soon as I arrived the owl flew and my little guy try to run but was to weak, so I grab him and put him in a bucket with wood shaving I had handy until I close the rest of the coops.
All the time I took to close coops7 of them the owl was yelling at me and pretty close to me as well (this are barn owls we have two and they are not afraid of us at all my husband gets pretty mad with them because they sit in one side of the house one and the other side the other and the talk to each other (around 3 in the morning) and my husband gets outside and screams at them and they answered him and not even move. Any ways I got my baby inside the house , clean the punctures (2 of them ) if I keep cleaning they keep bleeding so I just wash the guy and put him in a nice laundry basket with wood shavings and hope he is alive tomorrow.
Now I see that Nustuck is good but I don't have it handy, will coconut oil work as well I have lots of that should I put it in the holes directly, should I stich the holes , they are perfectly round.
I was thinking if by tomorrow he makes it then he will be just fine and should just keep putting some antibiotic in the form or coconut oil.
What do you guys stink I am worry and nervous and confuse.
Your help will be pretty much appreciated.

To stop a chicken from bleeding try corn starch. Chickens don't clot well, so I keep a supply of this in the coop store room.

For healing unsightly wounds (some gruesome side gouges on my hens from mating) I have had miraculous results from that Veterycin spray.

Or maybe chickens just heal really, really well on their own and the spray was to make me feel less guilty. It is expensive enough to work great on guilt.

Hi Pozees, thanks I was gonna look for you in the Colorado Thread, you aways have good options for injure birds.
My other girl with the ballon (remember) she did not make it she last it 1 week, but it was a constant think with me and the needle to drain the air and next time he moved she had more air again, she got antibiotics for the whole week but never put on weight she was eating and drinking but probably was something inside as well.
I have polyvisol should I give it in his beak (3-4 drops) or mix with water.
Those owls are always after my birds, my chickens are smart because as soon as starts to get dark they get inside but I lost a bunch od muscovy ducks last year to this owls and this year this little guy is my first casualty, the door to his coop was close ( the girl was inside and him well just did not make it on time got distract it buy something maybe) i ma just glad I came on time so the owl did not have much of a chance, but o boy he was mad chase me all to the rest of the coops screaming (a really weird noise), I guess I took his dinner.
Is too bad we can not shoot those horn owls.

I have the spray vetericyn but I tough was for eyes only.
I have corn starch as well so if tomorrow the bleeding start I will get they ready.
Thanks

I make a spray that has orange in it but I do a white vinegar in which I soak orange peels for a couple of weeks then take out the orange peels. For about 2 cups of that I probably put in about a tsp. of orange oil, and a few drops each of lavendar oil, peppermint oil, and sometime eucalyptus. I spray the crevices of the nest boxes and edges of roosts with it.

I've never made a spray with just orange oil and water, but my inclination would be to use about 1 tsp. per cup water...or maybe trying a little less and adding more if needed. I'd also add some of the other eo's that I mentioned above. But that is just my guess.
