The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

well every ones chickens are different..My poor chickens get bald during moult and I have no picking because of baldness. The back of your chickens head looks like my flock in spring if I don't cull out my males. I have stitched back of heads on occasion.
It is usually a young bird eating out of adults dishes that looses feathers or young birds pulling feathers out of baby's here. Or young birds getting to close to momma and chicks. Serious screaming than and feathers flying.

Poor Lucy's molt........has made her look like a naked neck BCM :D

I couldn't help but giggle at her. I don't think she was really amused :)

I have noticed that as the girls molt their pecking order seems to change? No one really bothered Lucy and she could hang with all the tots without a problem. But now Sophie the BCM has been pecking at her at feeding time. She now follows Stella around like her shadow.

I will never understand chicken pecking order or roosting order.......it keeps changing :D it must be why chicken tv is so much fun to watch

But I do know when the temps got in the 20s they all bunched up together to keep warm. That tells me they can get along if they choose to.

That's funny right there!
Yea the pecking order is nuts...our SL, who has never layed, ruled. Go figure? When one of our other hens went broody she could run her off with a single peck. When the broody hen quit being broody, and she got pecked she would just turn her back to her and keep eating the treats I put out. Didn't take long before the pecker learned she was having no effect and was missing out on fresh corn or whatever...
