The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

fenwickchic, lalaland covered it well. The only alternative I would suggest if you can't find or don't want to use permethrin (it is what I used when my birds had mites, I bought liquid concentrate and sprayed everyone down, and it work fabulously well, and fast) you can look for something Cynthia12 (and probably others) has suggested in the past - in the pet bird section there should be a spray bottle for mites and lice used on parrots/parakeets/finches, spritz a couple of times under each wing, around vent, and based on my own experience I'd spritz the head as well, I had a Silkie whose head was pretty badly infested. I think the pet bird spray is pyrethrin. Right now if I was you I would be way more concerned about making sure my birds were rid of the parasites quickly. You are right to worry. By the time you see a bird looking down it has been suffering in silence a lot longer. They are built to hide weakness, like most animals and birds.

Going forward, keeping a dust bath bowl available for them with wood ash, peat moss, dirt, etc. should work as a preventive. Stop beating yourself up, you have worked hard to keep your birds happy and well fed. Now you have learned as most of us have, the hard way, to pick up birds every few days and check for parasites. They come on silently and without warning.

whooo eeee! it's danged cold out there. My idea of the metal stool holding and radiating the heat from the heat lamp didn't work - it wasn't frozen to the touch but still felt cool to my fingers. I might try lowering the heat lamp to see if I can warm up the stool more. It is just pointing in the air, so not doing much, although it was only a few degrees below zero in the coop, not the -28 it is outside.

Girls are cold and I'm sure the warm mash was frozen before I got back to the house.

Scratch makes the best bird feed! so nice and cheap, and that plus boss and suet takes care of all the birdfeeding needs.

Happy New Year's everyone, and here's hoping 2014 is kind to our chickens and us!

Thought we'd share...
Our oldest daughter got married a few months ago and moved to a subdivision in town.
So... we built her a chicken tractor for Christmas.
We wrapped a 50 lb bag of layer pellets to put under the tree
with a note saying "3 hens from our hen house are included".

Fun Fun... we weren't sure what she'd think but she was WAY excited.
I'm afraid the younger 2 daughters are now trying to figure out if they can get a chicken tractor on the balcony of an apartment or dorm room.

That's awesome!!

Such a cute little tractor. How much does one of those cost you to build in materials?

UGH.....I went down this morning to let everyone out and feed. I noticed one of my EE girls had a dirty butt which is unusual, as usually she is one of my cleanest hens! I picked her up, and looked at her vent area. She has bugs.... they are whitish yellow and there are white eggs? I am assuming on the feathers. I was by myself or would have taken pictures. Would these be lice or mites? I picked up a couple more of the hens, and she is the only one I found with them on... I know that I need to get some wood ash and dust them really good.... Do I also need to take out my deep litter and start over? I am bedding with leaves and pine needles right now, but started with some pine shavings. Also, should I Nustock her vent (and anyone else I find them on) or no? It didn't look very irritated yet, but I know if I don't do something about it now, it will only get worse....

I do ferment my feed, (always has a sour/tangy smell), which is a commercial 22% meat bird feed, I add 2 grain scratch to that, sometimes along with oatmeal, a little garlic powder and sometimes red pepper flakes. They get any food scraps that we throw out, and since it has gotten cold, I have been throwing out some scratch of a night before roosting time. Other than that they get to free range on about 2 acres (there are 6 but they haven't ventured that far away from the coop) I haven't been able to find ACV with the mother and haven't been able to afford to order any yet. I did try to make my own,( http://www.fresh-eggs-daily.com/2012/09/diy-make-your-own-apple-cider-vinegar.html ) but it didn't turn out quite right... I think I had too much water to start with or something....

Is there anything else that I should be doing?

Lice.

They won't kill a chicken, but they can make their feathering look terrible.

Dust them with wood ash, apply nustock where you see the eggs. Is that what you use, or is it neem oil? Someone correct me...

Mites are serious, lice are not.

You have chickens, lice will happen.

I've dealt with all parasites except worms.

Mites are by far the worst.

Oh another question.... Does it matter what kind of wood I burn to get the ash? We have mostly pine cut for taking camping.... Will that work?

You know... We should have tracked that more closely. This is the third one we've made. The first was our own and it is 4x8. I use it around the farm for various things like growing out cull cockerels. The second we built a few years ago was 3x6. It was for my sister and similar to this one. We had a budget of $100 and were able to stick to it. We like the 3x6 size for transient people since it fits easily in the back of a pickup so it's easy to move. I'm guessing this one cost us about $150. It has more hardware on it (3 sets of hinges). One side of the top opens as well as the triangular door in the back for collecting eggs and the bottom half of the back for filling the feeder. So in addition to the hinges we had the lumber, 1 sheet of siding, one roll of hardware cloth ($27 for 50' so plenty left), the hanging feeder, a water bucket, a couple of chicken nipples, and a rope attached to the back side to drag it to move it daily.
