The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I like the cabbage holder. I just got some cabbage for a quarter each. Then I was also able to get some left over outer leaves other buyers had left behind. My 2 ducks are thrilled. My chickens could care less.

Not to change the subject, but...
My rooster clucks at me or my husband every time we walk by him.
We walk around the years for exercise, and the chickens just keep pecking around ( once they know we don't have treats ) then every circuit, Eddie says, and I quote, " bawk bawk bawk bawk" to us. Not aggressive, not anything in particular, just rather matter-of-fact.
What does it mean? Do your roosters do this?

Edited to correct my phone's auto-correct.

I know everyone's egg laying is down so I thought I would share some good news.

This month from 8 hens I collected 31 eggs. Not a lot, I agree, but last month they only laid 26 so things are looking up!!! Must be those few extra minutes of daylight we are getting now.

See spring is close !!!

:)

I'm getting more and more eggs now. My eggs are way up from summer ;) but all my chickens were pretty much babies then!

almost all of my older ones all took a break in the summer to raise chicks.

This is my second model of "cabbage swing" to occupy penned up chickens. The chain was too short on the first one, but the concept worked very well. I found a length of chain that was long enough, drilled a 3/8" tunnel through the cabbage core, fashioned a "needle" with coat hanger wire, and threaded the chain through the cabbage. I hang it from a rafter in the run.

Great job..

I collected 8 eggs today so I am thrilled myself. I should be hatching in a few weeks if my pullets start soon. I am looking forward to the new years of show prospects..
