The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Just went out to take some water and was pleasantly surprised that is it 8 degrees F inside while outdoor temps are -6 with -20s wind chill. This is the first time my hen shed has been warmer inside than it is outside.

Our cold snap has passed and it's going up to 50 today!

My hanging "pan-type" wild bird feeder was caked with deep snow and frozen water so I brought it in and thawed it on low temp. in the oven. It was so hard I couldn't break it off unless I heated it up.

Justine, 50 degrees? really? that gives you bragging rights! here, the newscasters are boasting that minneapolis is colder than the antartica this morning, and alaska, but it is colder in siberia, or parts of siberia anyway. I'm usually about 10 or 15 degrees cooler than minneapolis.

The water froze overnight in the coop in the heated dog bowl - somehow I forgot to empty it out so it wouldn't add moisture overnight....and I know any eggs will be frozen before I get home today.

Aoxa it's probably the calm before the storm. We hit 45 here yesterday and everything was starting to melt. It's 23 now with bitter wind chill & snow. The snow wasn't suppose to come till later but lake effect snow does what it wants with the lake so close.

Lala that's really cold!! Tho kind of cool you can say your colder than Alaska lol

Girls still out and about. I made up some eggs & rice for them and took it out to them. Something warm for their crops. They seem to rather be in the old run again today. I don't care as long as they are warm. Of course my mom will probably care if she has to shovel later to get them in the coop lol. I always have a container full of "nana crack" for her for such emergencies. She throws the scratch down and walks to coop followed by the girls :)

We are notorious for weather fluctuations.

From 50 to zero overnight. with 35mm of rain before it hits 0... going to be some slippery roads...

be safe if you or Susan have to drive tomorrow....

PS:  and you get 2 for the price of one! :D

I tried putting out a "dust bath" for my girls. I went to the big box store, and bought one of those multipurpose mixing tubs. I wanted something big enough for several to fit in it together. And heavy enough that it wouldn't tip over when the stepped on it. But they wouldn't use it. I'm wondering if it's because it's black...? (They don't seem to like anything black) They'd rather dig a hole in the run and bathe in it. It's funny to watch them! Gives a whole new meaning to community bathing lol
