I gave them another bale of hay today............I figured it couldn't hurt & have a few spots still blowing in a little snow. They were happily digging thru it. I closed their old run to. I didn't want my mom to have to worry about getting them into the coop since snow & winds have picked up more.

They are closing the thruways & other main roads now. Travel advisory in effect. Keep warm everyone!!!!

Okay...so I just moved the queen over to the kiddo side. She drank like she was just getting to an oasis and is just hanging out. I sat around and observed for awhile and the young'ns are a little leery, but there are no outright attacks and it seems peaceful. She had settled down on the floor in the litter by the time I left. I don't think she's been able to lounge on the floor since they've been staying in the hen shed - which is probably since late October when they were confined to the kennel run after the hawk attack.

I guess I better rig a nest box. Although she hasn't laid in awhile. But the young'ns probably will before spring when I can turn them all loose again.

How bout a box from costco or something similar? Works well for free. Or you can always do a recycling bin. Unless you want something dark and secluded... I feel like they should make those rubbermaid totes in half sizes... They'd be so perfect for a nesting box that didn't take up so much room.

I decided to use a heat lamp and had my hubby secure it up high. Worries me but I think it'll be okay. I added straw and stapled feed bags over the North side vent area and made a straw path to the heated water bowl in the run. They looked so much more comfy! I have a rooster limping now. Its always something!

oh good! poor girl, cold is stress enough and now she can relax! I have some worries about an icelandic - the one with the crippled wing and blind eye. I'm always picking her up and hand feeding her. Being stuck in the coop is hard on everyone, not enough space to get away totally. I envy Justine's spacious barn!
