One of my "little kiddos" (who are really "mid-sized" now rather than "little") Laid an egg today!

ETA: 21 weeks old

So small it didn't move the scale but she laid an egg! I noticed there was finally a nest in the "temporary nest box" on the younger kids side and there in the middle was a tiny egg.

I "think" it's this kiddo. (Photo is from a couple weeks ago and she's a bit larger and much redder in comb and wattles now.)

I still get excited about first eggs! And it's only 1F right now!

That's great. I still get excited when I find an egg after they haven't been laying in so long

It seems that Lala & Delisha has sent us their frigid weather. Its suppose to be -25 tomorrow.

I put in some more hay in their coop and in their old run. Girls walked thru 5 inches of snow today to get to their old run. I surely don't know why they like it so much except maybe its a little warmer since its up against the back of the garage? But apparently they did get over their snow phobia

I hung a cabbage head in their today as well. I will have to see tomorrow if they like it or not. Now is I could just get them to lay their egg in the nesting boxes or under it. Sophie & one of the big girls are laying in the old run

I don't want to block it off since they like going in there so much. Plus the tots can have some peace if they stay in the coop.

AFL - we're getting that negative weather and -50s wind chill supposedly tonight. All the counties are under travel restriction...may get stuck in tomorrow. They're talking about $2500 fines if you're on the road and one of the police is in the mood to give a ticket.

WHAT? Why? What if you need to get to work? :/

I have NEVER seen this happen. We have some terrible road conditions too. We are under a flash freeze warning right now. It was 40 today and is going to around -4 tonight. We had a lot of rain today. Travelling tomorrow is not going to be fun.

Brrrr...so bitter cold today..I hope we are done with this stuff..ridiculous to say the least.

I did not spend much time outside at all..Just enough to give water a few times and gather eggs.

Can you let this girl out w/your chickens at all? She's very beautiful!

Thank you. :) I don't have chickens yet. She is fine with my cats so hopefully with chickens too. Time will tell. Getting chicks next year. I had to get a new roof this month. Messed up all my plans for the house and yard for the year. grrrrrr!

Quote: Exactly. It's insane. People can't go to work if they do that.

I think it's because of the "coddling state" that we seem to be heading towards. When I was in High School we'd have these kinds of temps and snow and they'd let school out. Then us kids would get in our cars and go wherever we wanted...to a friend's, shopping, etc. No one told us we couldn't drive!!!!!

They're having a lot of trouble with blowing, drifting snow that closes over the north/south roads. If folks are out driving around and get stuck then they have to deal with getting them out..and they're in the way of keeping on top of the plowing. I guess I can look at it that way.

I just re read your post you're only 10 days in with the new chickens.... It takes a little while but they will settle down and integrate. Just make sure to have plenty of feed stations. Maybe a new one away from coop that new girls know about???

Okay. Thank you. Yes, they haven't been here long; I was just concerned about them always being chased off the food. I've increased the feeding stations and things seem to be going more smoothly. Thank you. =)

@ Delisha:

Does your ammonia tennis balls trick work on coyotes?
We don't have a raccoon problem with our chickens now, but we had a coyote scare a couple of weeks ago.
