The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I have a supply of tiny zip ties but every time I thought about putting them on I was concerned about being able to take them off. Seems like trying to get a scissors in there may be hard later on.

All I need to do is add zip ties until they are sold. I will tell the owners to remove them when they get home. I just need to be able to combine chicks before selling without selling the wrong breed.

Okay...instruct me on the vet wrap leg bands.

I tried using vet wrap on my last group of kiddos.  I'd put it on and they'd take it off.  I'd put it on and they'd take it off.  Repeat.  (This is the song that never ends....)

The trick with the vet wrap is to wrap it twice really loose and then take the loose part, pull it to the back, then lunch it between two fingernails. Vet wrap adheres better when pinched.
I used to use tiny zip ties but really hated getting them off, even when using cuticle scissors. With the vet wrap you don't have to worry about it getting too tight over night, and it has so much give that it relaxes some and you really don't have to change them but a few times.

I am hoping that is what it was. I wish I had extra $$ to get a game cam. I would really like to see what they do :)

I am curious. I noticed the above girls has blue ears. Does she lay blue eggs?

I can't remember-- is Stella the one that was caught in the cabbage hanging rope? If so, could she have rubbed against something vigorously to try to get loose and have done that to her head?
It is the one & same but she didn't have the feather loss then. And there was enough rope she did not need to rub on anything per se.

She lays a tinted egg (which is cream).

Note that ear lobe colour does not always indicate egg colour. I have had mutts with white earlobes that laid brown eggs. :)

I was curious since Edies eggs a light blue & she has blue earlobes. I wonder what makes their ears those colors? I might just need to do some googling to see if I can find what makes their ears certain colors :)

On another note....I have been looking for an old billboard to cover my hoop coop. I got an email this morning that a fire rep has old ones for fire companies to hang at their hall. I sent an email back stating I would like one for non fire company use. Hopefully I can get one.

They are so expensive to buy online. The shipping cost is the worse part with their weight.

Aoxa- I googled ear lobe colors in chickens & the 1st 10 sights say that the color of a chickens ears indicate the color of their eggs.

Hmmmm makes me wonder if there is some truth in it but mutts/mixes are the exception to the rule? I am going to have to look at everyones ears when I get home now
