The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I'm getting a 'property guardian dog' but most people wouldn't fully appreciate her. The Heelers do a great job protecting the birds.

In the mean time, here's a picture of a very handsome man with one of his young Patterdale Terriers....not long after the pup drew a chuck. Excellent job for such a young fella.

Pic was taken Spring of 2012.

High winds. Drifting lake effect snow (Lake MI). -30s wind chills.

Well my gas bill is $50 budget billing & I usually have credit for a couple months at the end of the year. I'm hoping some wood that's inside dries some so I can turn the furnace down again. I hate That I have to use next years wood & it has not seasoned enough so it's not burning well.

I like the S word SPRING but I have had enough with SNOW.

Just curious, what kind of wood are you burning? Some green wood burns better than seasoned, as hard as that might be to believe.

I provide wood to an older lady and she demands yellow locust (even though I don't charge her)

I'm not in the wood business..I just help her out because she has no one else. The state gives her a little money to pay for wood but I just let her have it.

I am getting an LGD. Maremma female in a few weeks .My DH does not know yet..and he might not be happy. But I figure the dog will save me money in birds in the long run. She might kill a few in the beginning. I lost 11 chicks and 8 juveniles last year to predators. It was an expensive year.

I have much to learn about them in the next few weeks..I am a little worried..they are with *people*. I hope that my picking the puppy up at 10-12 weeks and keeping it outside with the chickens it will bond with them right away. I was told I could pick her up at 6 weeks..I am afraid to pick her up that early. They miss many things moms can teach.

We lost power in one of the big storms and I lost a bunch of eggs. I sure wish spring would arrive. It is -18 with the wind chill. My poor birds treat this like nonsense.
Exciting!
