The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

A lot of interesting ideas!

I think I need to make a visit to the junk yard and see what they have out there. We have a very interesting "junk yard" that is a well kept secret that has all kinds of "Americana" from many eras. Not many people know about it but my husband knows the owner and lets him get whatever he wants.

Your comment about the couch brought his place right to mind.... Hmmm...

Oh my sounds just like a place I would LOVE to visit.......we have a few junk yards around here but they are just for cars. I have to suffice with large junk pick up days and driveway around and see what people put out. I am hoping for more landscape stones

Yep...this guy's place is incredible. I'm thinking it's about 10 - 15 acres of all kinds of things. Old gas pumps. Old tractors from every era. Railroad crossings that were taken down. Old gas cans. All kinds of small misc. items. Old signs. A real junk yard. Not a dump.

Please pass the word around.

Its free, an Iowa state program.  You can log in as a guest, and the "room" opens 10 minutes before it starts.

Technical difficulties caused it to cancel. Lala, please let us know if/when it gets rescheduled. Thanks!

Hey guys,

Just checking in. I have been SO busy with work and the farm that I have had zero time to keep up with this thread. I will be back, I promise. I am working non-stop, even on the weekends. Susan has left her job to work full time on the farm as well it's that busy.

Our hatching this year has been out of this world. We've hatched 828 chicks so far this year :) More to come this weekend!

We have decided to cut out Easter Eggers next year, and to add Black & Blue Copper Marans (hatching Saturday) as well as Blue/Black/Splash Ameraucanas (also hatching this Saturday). We may get out of Silver Pencilled Plymouth Rocks, as they are not laying like they should be.

Hope everyone else is having a good spring. This is the first week we actually have anything close to spring weather. We've had a record winter for snowfall. On one side of the barn, the snow is almost touching the eaves of the roof.

Also, if you ever build your own barn, don't use a steel roof in the wrong direction where the snow slides off right in front of your barn entrance and exit.. Ugh.. Dangerous AND difficult to walk through.. because it always happens after you plough through it.

Glad you could drop in a minute, Justine!
About your steel roof: you can get "snow guards" which are really just a kind of steel rail that you put up over the entrance exit - it kind of steers the snow to the side. Looks like a giant ^ on your roof.

I have the same problem, and have actually been trapped in the house when the snow slides off and then blocks the door from from opening. And have been caught by a roof avalanche and knocked to the ground. I've learned to look up first!

and wow on the number of chicks!!!!

Will do!

There is such a thing as snow guards! ?! :-0
I'm sure that my husband would add that to his "I will never live there if...".
For instance... Top on his list...
I will never live somewhere where it gets so cold people plug their cars in. ;-P

I am getting them now that I know they exist!! Thanks for that :D

I don't plug my car in, and it gets way too cold here.
