The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Here it is. Didn't load first time.

Well, the coop is dark and quiet. Everyone is asleep. No chick's yet as far as I could tell... so off to bed I go. Not sure I'll get much sleep. I'm hoping to wake up and find at least a couple new fluffy chick's under Ms Broody-butt.

absolutely nothing!  its day 20.   I never candled, dithering between letting the broody do what she knows to do versus intervention...am second guessing whether any eggs are fertile.  will post as soon as I know something.  by day 24, I figure if nothing has hatched, I'll have to get some chicks.  darned, I am nervous!

Ohhh, I'm praying that some will hatch! Maybe you'll wake up to a fluff ball or 2 like I'm hoping to.

Wow, great hatch! Congratulations!
. Thanks I just threw them on didn't want to eat they were muddy and unknown age, couldn't sell them..so I figured maybe a few would hatch it was cold like 25 to 30 at night and the were right on the floor... but I have healthy spoiled chickens so. Healthy eggs....I have some shipped Marans 6 due to hatch next week I will be lucky to get 2 ..

msbhaven, that is a great hatch!  what hatched?

and joyfulkeeper, absolutely nothing is happening under the broody. day 21 today.  how bout you?

Lala maybe it's like a watching a pot. Nothing happens when you watch it? I'm headed out of town to camp so I am hoping to see chick pictures from you when I get back :)

Temps are dropping here. Low. 50s during the day & low 30s at night where we are camping. I certainly hope it doesn't snow :(

I am so excited I can't stand it!!!!

At least 2 of 8 hatched, I thought last night I might have heard cheeping but thought it was wishful thinking and my imagination. ditto this morning, and then....I saw her feathers move and then... a beak poked out. I am totally crazed, thank goodness there aren't any neighbors or I would be locked up, running around jumping and screaming "I GOT CHICKS"!!!!

It is so amazing!!!! I felt exactly the same way the first time. Just wait till you see how mamma communicates with and takes care of those kiddos.

Oh...and be prepared....when mamma first meets up with any of her flock mates there will be a brawl.... and they'll quickly learn not to mess with her.
