The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Right now I don't need the iodine - just something to "sooth" the dry skin. But I'll keep the iodine in mind for other things.

The main reason I avoid blu-kote is that you can't see the condition of the wound so it's hard to tell if infection is setting in or even if it's getting better. Used it one time and i'll never use it again after that unless I'm desperate and don't have anything else. The blue didn't totally wear off for more than 6 months and it was extremely hard to observe the wound.

That's why I asked how long it takes for the iodine color to subside. I need to be able to note changes if I'm going to act quickly.

Leah's mom I would think several days applications of coconut oil would help. When I got stitches I applied it & e doc said the stitches were epready to come out in 4 days instead of the normal 10.

I would also get rid of the mean Roo. Or the other hen causing problems. No mean chickens are allowed here. Normal passive chicken behavior allowed.

I'm made up some screening frames to dry the bushel plus of greens I cut today. 2nd cutting in 2 weeks. I'll post pics later. I'm eating quick then back out to cut the rest. The greens include mustard, beet, kale, spinach & few other I can't remember without looking at markers :D

I'm being harassed from the compost pile as I work in the garden........ Apparently the girls want to 'help' but the only ones who can get in are the babies :)

Yes, yes, post pics of the screens. Love this idea. Also, I heard castor oil is fab for this.

Actually......

The original intent of "OT" in this thread was "Old Timers". It meant those that had lots of years of experience raising chickens that could come and help out those of us that were newer with their wisdom and experience.

But...
In my opinion, us "natural thinking" folks like to have some just plain friendship-talk too. And we enjoy lots of new folks joining in...it's not an "exclusive group" ... We like to see each other's new chicks and goats and llamas and large dogs, etc. We talk about poison ivy (and natural remedies, of course) and all kinds of other things.

So I guess it can do "double duty". OLD TIMERS and OFF TOPIC kind of.
We just want to encourage each other to do the most natural/healthy things for our chickens and hang out too!
