The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Might want to check w/the vet before using benadryl. Cats are very different and sometimes what you can use with a dog will kill a cat. I've also read some reviews on NuStock where people used it on cats and it killed them.

Just for a double-check...be sure it's okay for them :D

I posted a link for some plaintain salve awhile ago seeing how chickens eat the stuff i bet you could use it...I use it for diaper cream i will look up a link and post it..

it probably is in your yard it is generally considered a weed...i looks like a flat green flower , they leaves are about an inch wide and pedal shaped ...the whole plant is usually about 4 to 6 inches across ..

@LindaB220 and @misbhaven

Misbhaven is right... I have never seen a yard without the stuff unless the folks use a lawn service and eradicate all weeds. I'll bet you'll find some if you take a walk around :D

It is less than 24 hours and I'm a wreck. Lucy is crying in the wire cage (chicken cage!!) and wants out. I've never heard of this and I'm miserable. Lucy is miserable, she was so scared with Mia that she peed and pooped while running after her.
If you can try & keep them separated for a few days or a week. Separate food/water/litter box. Let Lucy stay in a room by herself to settle down. She may just need a few days alone to regroup. I am wondering if perhaps she got stung or something while on the porch? If Mia is not acting aggressive towards her now I doubt it was something she did. I have had a cat this scared before when my Male likes to torment her longer than usual. Separation to relax and not be stressed worked well for her. I wouldn't give up hope just because of something you read on line. Cats are very resilient

@armorfirelady and others that have Rose of Sharon...

I thought you might like to try this! (Too bad Mumsy isn't at the garden thread anymore...) Anyway, posting out here instead of pm because I thought someone else might be interested.

you should watch "my cat from hell" there's an environmental issue causing this behavior, and it doesn't have to be like this.

Try sedating the crazy one with Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for a few days. There was a time when my dog was having "freak-out" episodes where he'd seem to see ghosts... would look at a spot in the room and then crawl, quaking, under the furniture to hide and wouldn't come out. The vet could find nothing wrong, said he could put him on Prozac; OR we could try Benadryl when he had an "episode". The Benadryl was much cheaper, could be administered only as needed, and worked great. The "spells" lasted for a few months and disappeared as mysteriously as they came, and eight years later Ben is a healthy 14 year old with no issues.

thanks everyone. I'm still miserable. watched the videos. have them separated out which is pretty difficult in my small open floor plan house with only two interior doors. heading to hardware store to get eyehooks to lock doors with as the doors are really pocket doors and slide, and lucy can open them no matter what I wedge underneath. spoke to a cat behavorist (who knew there was such a thing). am taking both in for vet exam (oh the unplanned expenses) wed to see if underlying medical issues - apparently an ill cat can provoke the same kind of survival behavior you see in chickens when they beat up ill hens!
