The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Oh! So that makes sense.

And I'd be really happy if mine molted soon. Last year they waited until it was late Nov./early December and they were naked when it was very cold outside. Not a good thing :(

Curious how much you charged for the hens?

It's a slow molt. They just look disheveled now lol and at least them being bare during the cold lets you know they are cold hardy

I only asked $5 per hen

I keep saying that if I had 100 hens I could sell every egg they produce.  At my husband's workplace people always want them and I never have enough.

I'm in the same boat exactly. I have a tiny flock of 8, all great layers, and I could double or triple it and still sell all the eggs. Someday I'll fence my yard to allow free ranging, and then I'd really like to have about 2 dozen hens. I've already got the coop space.

Quick question
How often do you change out nesting material when they start laying? Before I'd change out all pine shaving from their sleeping area and the grass from the nesting boxes 1-3 times a month depending on how dirty it all was. Now that one of them (I only have two chickens) is laying eggs do I change that nest out as often? Will it upset the chicken or will she be cool with it and just make another one? Thanks!
