The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I think I won the war against the groundhog. I just kept harassing him by sticking sticks or fence posts down his two exit holes from under the shed, and blocking the entrance by the shed. I figured it was pointless to fill the holes as he can dig like anything, so I used old sunflower stalks, milkweed, etc. and since I've read they are fastidious creatures, I did toss used kittly litter down the hole followed by water so it would be both stinky and slimy.

Am pretty sure he has moved on, as the holes haven't been disturbed for two days now.... keeping my fingers crossed. Now if I could only deal with the rat under the porch.
Outstanding, now to get rid of the rat. Try the 5 gallon bucket with the can and peanut butter. Here's a video.

@armorfirelady
Thanks...but....
For some reason the links shared from Lowes won't go the the product you tried to link. I have tried for the last several weeks to post Lowe's links here on byc and they all just go to a generic page.... So this one did too.

Could you go to the product page and copy the name and product number and post it here? That way I can look it up by search on their website.

I don't think you're describing lice at all. were these gooey spots moving? or just sitting there? did you scald the birds. Any creepy crawlies would have been killed with the scalding. I believe what you were seeing is the pigment that is sometimes left behind where the feather shaft was removed from the skin. Just use the blade of the knife to scrape these dark spots, and you'll see that the pigment/gel, what ever it is comes right out of the shaft spot.
They were not moving.

I think, in retrospect, that the water was too hot, and you are exactly right.

They are going to be soup when I defrost them again. :)

That's beautiful!

Personally I'd just use OSB and paint it a lot. I'm too cheap to make something really nice. ;-)

Good paint costs as much or more than other quality materials!

I AM alive....just been livin' life. It's under the bridge to our front door...the bridge is so we don't have to go down outside stairs to get into the house. I just posted it to show the roof made out of the materials being discussed here. At least I think it's the same stuff. Been so long ago. That roof has been on there for over 12 years.

Tina raised 5 chicks this spring...3 for a friend who wants to get in the backyard chicken business and we kept 2, one is a Blue Lace Red Black Wyandotte roo which I don't know what to do with and a Red Pyle Brahma pullet. Tina layed for about a month and went back to being broody.
