Mine do change in personality but I think it's because they feel crummy.
@vpatt
It seems the normal adult molt is in the fall but the juvies can also have a mild molt based on their age.
This is my theory.... and only a theory. What I "think" is normal would be to molt after a mamma broody sets her last chicks in thesummer based on a hormone cycle. Then they're all feathered and ready for the cold of late fall and winter in a timely manner. But since we've bred for them NOT to brood and to lay a huge amount of eggs, I think that the hormone cycle is off-kilter so we end up with these birds molting too late in the year and they sometimes get caught with their clothes off when it's too cold for that nonsense.
Again, just my theory.
I agree but wanted to add that I notice in the spring that my PR girls tend to lose some feathers.mespecially their bloomers as my mom calls them. They look like they have pants on for winter & in the spring they lose them. I notice the others lose a few feathers here & there so it leads me to believe that after their fall molt they grow in extra feathers for winter warmth and then shed them in the spring. Kind of like a dog does. Just my theory tho,
Results are in. Total of 7 1/2 ft of snow here. Girls finally ventured outside today onto the narrow shoveled path to the coop. Guessing they got coop fever from being in so much the last week. It was their choice. I never locked them in. I leave it up to them to decide if they want to venture out. Peepers hung out on the roost most of the day but I have to say all in all there was no squabbling.
And the heated base I purchased failed after 24 hours. I thought maybe because the snow had unplugged it but it was plugged in and the heated dog dish was still working. Thank goodness I had the spare heated dog bowl.
Off to bed more snow to shovel before the rains come tomorrow. Hopefully I don't need to build an ark...............
