The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I agree, please keep your advice going on BYC! I don't blog or face book or any of that other high tech stuff! Luckily, I've not had any problems with mushy chick except for those 2, and one of the ones that came in to a hardware store as a special order. I'm a little scared of that styrofoam incubator after that. I bleached it when I put it away, and will give it an extra bleaching before I start using it again.

Ron, when you talk about weak bleach solution for dipping hatching eggs, what strength are you talking about? Have you done a trial with washed eggs vs. non-washed eggs to compare hatching rates? I'm intrigued by a study done where eggs were dipped in a Vitamin C solution. It produced a better hatch, and increased chick viability. I'm wondering if it was the vitamin properties, or the antibacterial properties... even change in pH that was the cause of the improved hatch/viability.

good!

EDIT: I'm kinda vested here too but no one seems to pay attention to anything I post. Ah, but that's ok...I have always liked my own company.

All kidding aside, I do have a few friends who come here once in a while and I really enjoy reading what others post so it's by no means a waste of my time to visit here.
I for one Ron, miss hearing your posts. You're frank, down to earth, and painfully honest. Qualities I appreciate in a person.

Glad you got such great results, so nice that you got a break!   And are you kidding me?  You have lambs?  where are the pictures?   nothing sweeter than baby lambs, they are even better than baby chicks....

@ronott1
, love the sound track on the video.  happy looking and sounding chicks!

What kind of sheep do you have?

Please don't start a blog Ron (California)...this thread is an excellent place to present tips and helpful advice in general.

Keep in mind..I still have Australorps so I'm vested here! lol

Oops....not the Australorp thread...lolol But it still applies!!!

Ron aka Hellbender

Hello there, wasn't going to comment but after reading it again I just want to say. I love reading all the posts from all of you. Personal or not. If I don't comment doesn't mean I'm not interested. Sometimes I'm too busy, tired or just don't have a comment. Hang in there. sue

BTW keep warm and safe out there to all in the storm's path. We are due for a foot or better and very frigid temps. It started here at 1pm.

I agree with Sue.

As for the snow & temps ..............17 feels balmy after single digits & a couple feet of snow is dusting after last Snowvembers 7 ft lol

Got my bucket feeders built yesterday, don't have crumble yet to test, get that tomorrow. Surgery is Tuesday and the chickens should be squared away between these and my nipple waterers, yeah!

We got six inches of snow over night and cold down to 17 now, nipple waters are holding their own.

That's great! I know you're relieved. Our thoughts & prayers will be with you, Tuesday, and as you recover. Be sure to come back and let us know how you are when you feel like it.
