The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Thanks. I had purchased an old hanging type scale from a junk/antique place several years ago because I wanted to have it just for "decor". I think it would have been one used for weighing buckets of milk in the milking shed, and it goes up to 50 lbs.

I've been thinking of just using it, but it won't be perfectly accurate. I'm going to try to see if I can weigh something and see how close it is.

They do make the same kind of hanging scales now, and there are some that read digital with English/Metric measure choices and down to the ounces. I guess if I like using the old one and need something more minutely accurate I could look into getting one of those.

I've looked at several platform scales and I think it would be hard to get a good sized bucket on them and also would be hard to see the read-out well. Some folks have told me that they are hard to read and balance on it.
I put about a 3 gallon bucket on it when I am weighing grains. I find its easier to read the electronic kitchen scale I have. The kitchen scale you couldn't read the weight because the bucket was over the read out. I use a large plastic tub to weight the pups in (Its about the size of 2 plastic shoe boxes stacked on top of each other) & works very well

Hi, this is a great thread, tho I haven't had time to read the entire thing. For now, I have one very simple question.

What is the difference between unpasteurized apple cider vinegar and the regular apple cider vinegar you see in the grocery store?

Thanks in advance for any information received!!

Another person said they are using this scale: Since the price was so low, I tried bidding and got one for $5 (Almost $14 with shipping) so I'm going to give it a try. I figured that if it didn't work well I wouldn't have lost much. The person that recommended said she's using one of these to weigh birds after processing when she puts them in the freezer and has used it for quite awhile. Of course, you'd have to put some kind of container on it to hold whatever you're weighing. I guess I'll give it a review after I use it a few times.

found out why my alfalfa seeds wouldn't sprout when I wanted to give the chickens some greens.

Who knew this was the symbol for irradiated foods treated with radiation? (and it looks like such a happy, innocent graphic!!!

And who knew you could put on the milk carton "electronically pasturized" and mean nuked?
