The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

A few years ago we made a temporary outdoor wire covered pen that was attached to the chick shed that was inside a larger fenced area where the adult chickens were (who slept in the barn). At 12 weeks we tore down the temporary pen, so that the chicks could be in the same fenced area with the adults, and they integrated okay. The two groups had separate sleeping areas that the doors open to the same area. It seemed that if there are enough chicks the adults don't bother them too much. The lowest hen would rush at the chicks sometimes it seemed just to scare them.

Since then we've done things differently each year. Some have grown up in the total free range area, with adults around also, and have slept in the same barn. There is always enough room so the young ones don't have to sleep close to the adults. I don't keep any chickens that are more aggressive than establishing pecking order.

For now though, due to a fox everyone has to be in the fenced area by the house.

I don't free range, but I have a big covered run. I make "safe houses" that the littles can go in and out of and the big chickens can't get into. An " igloo" made of chicken wire works well, with 3-4 entrances and a small food and water station. The littles run in and out as needed until they are integrated. It's also a great place to take a nap without them having to worry. Works well for me.

we let our ones how today with the broody 10 days old, only cause we were there and watching, the little ones thought it was funny to go chase the roosters while momma took a dust bath

I got 2 hens I'm watching they are claiming boxes and looking like raptors with no eggs even so if they are on the empty nest again tonight will give the other 2 hens some eggs

I LOVE having a broody. Wish I had one now!
I have 5 broody bantam, they will be setting my shipped eggs when they arrive.

Plus two large breed in my broody box, a silver laced Cochin and a RIR, plus a blue laced red Wyandotte needing to go in there next. And a few other that I'm sure will start in the next week. I'm over run with them. I will send some broody vibes your way.

I got 5 stooges, like 5 day old that think the food bowl is where they sleep don't want nothing to do with perch, 1 will use a rolled up wash cloth but refuses yet to get up on the perch lol

was pretty funny with the ones out at the farm with the broody too, 10 days old we let them out supervised with the broody, she was taking a dust bath when they noticed the roosters and decided to head to go chase them lol. good thing the roosters are both terrified of the broody
