The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

This is a change of subject but for years around here (since before I was born) ichthammol drawing salve has been used for wounds that have gotten infected. It is used on all of the animals and
If a cow, pig, sheep, goat, dog whatever got in infection in a wound a big glob of ichthammol was put on and an old rag tied around it and a few days later all was good. I got a couple infection at times and the same was done to me. Smells terrible and we wore it to school but I don't remember any of the farm kids that did not smell of it at one time or another. So no one payed the smell no never mind. I used it on my kids and will use it on they're kids too or whatever gets hurt.

IMO It has way different uses than nu stock though and it is thick like grease and does not separate.

I get it at tractor supply.
Miss Lydia supplied me with this link. Hope this is ok.

I may be dreaming, but I think I remember the name of this ointment and I can't imagine where from, but it was a long time ago! It just sounds so familiar. Sounds like something that would be very useful!

I had two marraduna basque chicks hatch yesterday. They were local eggs and I kept the humidity much higher than my first two tries at incubating. The first one hatched at the end of day 20. It had some of the egg white still in the eggshell. In fact, it carried around a little bit of shell after it hatched. The second hatched on day 21 and had much less of the white.

I left the two in the incubator overnight. I kind of thought chick #2 had a leg problem, but wasn't completely sure until this morning. Here are some pictures. I am not sure if this is spraddle/splay leg or a slipped tendon. I have tried to pull the tendon back into place, but it doesn't seem to give. I am putting pressure on it until the chick squeaks.

In the "natural" position.

The leg that is not in the correct position.

Is this baby chick getting around/up walking, using the bad leg and it's foot correctly yet texasmomma?

If there is no improvement within a couple of days with the brace/hobble on, I have a different idea on what the leg issue could be...

What's BOSS?

How much FF do you think 8 hens would go through in a day? Do you just put it out for them and they will regulate themselves, or should I be putting out a set amount?

They love it BTW!

BDM..congrats on your first SFH egg

I forgot but someone had there first turkey egg too..Congrats

Aoxa..I will take new pictures tomorrow..I am pretty sure it is a cockerel, but, would be nice to know for sure. I think the feathers are comining in at the saddle pointed.

My girls and I will be there. It will be our first show. We can't wait!!!!!!!
Oh my goodness! Get there early when they are still setting up. It is so exciting! I like to stand back out of the way and just take it all in. There will be a thousand or more entries. Bring a camera. Bring some $. I love the sale tables! You will find books, knick knacks, art work, leg bands, custom made cages, feeders, and stuff. Lots and lots of stuff! The sale cage area will be really crowded. Everything from geese, ducks, bantams, and large fowl. Some good, bad, ugly, and special. The special sells very fast. Even if you are not planning on buying birds bring a pet carrier just in case. And don't be shy! Everybody is having a good time.

Thanks...I'll check that out!

Since it's like grease - I wonder how it would do on scaly leg mites? What's your thought?

(Never had them but it's good to know what options are out there.)
