The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

She sounds so cute, glad she loves her birds

A few pictures of RIR
These are the base to the eggs I am hatching

Lovely birds, Delisha! May I use your photo for the blog? Now, is this a breed whose egg production drops off after 18-24 months?

everyone is getting along swimmingly

. The Runners as always immediately went for a swim. I am seeing the Pekins go to the food bowl to eat, and right now one of the Pekin's is in the pool taking a swim

. This is what I love about ducks. No pecking order issues. Well ok, just one of many things I like about ducks. I need more ducks

Great news! Love hearing stories about them.

I didn't realize you were in Minnesota too! thats great. Thanks for letting me know there is someone in Owatanna , I'll start looking. - it sounds like you are happy with your buckeyes?
So far I'm happy with them. We haven't eaten either of the cockerels that we've butchered, but they did dress out nicely. Yesterday I checked two of the hens for laying. (If I remember right, you can measure the distance between their pubic bones - one was barely a finger-width between so I don't think she's laying, but the other one was easily two finger-widths and seemed so I think she is) If I get a chance, I'll check the rest today. One of my Bucks had abandoned the "pullet flock" and moved in with the old hens and my brahma rooster in the other coop. Not sure if I'll just let her be or move her back when I get my Buckeye rooster. I do have 5 other Buckeye hens. We'll see. Anyway, I'll PM with the email address of the breeder I got my birds from.

mine RIR's are very friendly birds. I love them. I have 7 RIR hens. I should get more. Great birds
Thanks stony I forgot you had RIR too, I was hoping they would get along because the person who has the BA's has RIR too. Gives me an excuse to go out to her farm and really check out her birds.

Sorry, on the chrome browser I cant get to the end of the quote box so it looks like I'm quoting when I'm posting.
Where are you getting your rooster from? I wouldn't mind trying to introduce a rooster again.

Had so many rooster problems in the past. THe best rooster I had was a little silky mutt, but I didn't want his genes - so traded for a rooster that was just wicked mean with the hens, they started refusing to come out of the coop to keep away from him. Then had a rooster that was way too hard on one particular hen (Bee would say /cull her ). And no one was ever going broody, so....when I got rid of the last rooster, everything was sooo calm!
