The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

@JanetMarie

Did you say that you aren't going to be incubating anything for yourself this year?
The plan was to incubate some Cotton Patch goose eggs, and no chicken eggs, but now that has changed.

Yesterday I was contacted by someone in Michigan who had some chicken hatching eggs of a breed that I have wanted for a long time, so I had to take the opportunity. I just picked them up this morning.

I still plan to hatch the goose eggs, but that will probably be in at least a month from now.

Well, I might end up contacting you to incubate. But, honestly, I don't feel like messing around with new chicks this spring. I guess I'll have to see what I'm thinking a few weeks down the road.

Here are a couple of photos from yesterday. These are some happy campers since they've not been out much this winter. And the cockerel (Buckeye) has been kept separate from the girls so I'm SURE he was happy to have access!

Cell phone photos so not the greatest.

I'm really getting smitten by buckeye roosters, what a handsome boy. I see zero snow, your chickens must be in heaven. I like the coloring on the light blue mottled hen.

@oldhenlikesdogs

Yes...it was in the 60's the last 2 days and supposed to be 67 tomorrow. I hope that the trees don't get tricked into early budding then freeze!

The little blue girl is an SFH. I call her Cranky...because she has a cranky disposition. But her "real" name was "Winter".

This is Cranky,,,er I mean "Winter" last fall. I also love the blue color. She is one of last spring's pullets...was from German imported lines. (Perhaps that's why she's cranky...she's not at all like the SFH that were imported from Sweden in personality.) Meanest bird I've ever had actually. She's a biter and will stand up to me and "complain" to my face. If I pick her up I have to be careful for my hands so that she can'g bite me.) I point my finger at her and give her a tongue lashing and she will stand right up to me and lash back! Crazy bird!!!!!!

And this is "Whoopsie", also from the spring but from the Sweden lines. Whoopsie because she has a crest and I don't like crested birds. (So "Daisy" would be her other name...Whoopsie Daisy! But this girl has a very friendly personality and will actually let me pick her up and will stand on my lap for prolonged periods of time without trying to get away. She has such a fun personality!

I too am from German lines, so I understand her cranky personality. I still think she's gorgeous. She and I would be having quite a few conversations about her pushy attitude.

Whoopsie too is a looker. So now you have no SFH roosters? Those girls are too pretty not to hatch from them.

OH... and they illustrate one of the things I like about the SFH...lots of colors and variety (like I said...the proverbial box of chocolates!)

Here's a few from the box of chocolates...

A boy from spring - I don't have him anymore.

Another boy from spring. He was also from German line; don't have him anymore.

Another boy from spring...went to a new home and he's turned out really well. (That's "winter" or Cranky behind him.)

A 3 yo I still have.

A 3 yo that went to another home. I don't really care for this color.

This was Queen Emma. Beautiful coloring. Went to a new home.

My original rooster. He was here for 2 years then went to another home and did quite well there. He was just a kid in this photo...about 6 mos old. Had a crest. Crest to crest breeding not advised with sfh.

And....none of the following birds were mine but just to show other variations....

This isn't my bird...just posting to show yet another variation in color. I really love this color - snoleopard. Never had one.

And another boy that's not mine.

And a pullet that's not mine.

No, unfortunately none of this spring's boys worked out here. There is a lady that is about 1.5 - 2 hours north of me that will have excess cockerels this spring. I have considered trying to pick up one of hers but not sure how that would work out integrating with an existing boy and only 9 girls.... We'll see.....
