The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

y'all...I have an acquaintance that is experiencing curly toes in a 9 mo old pullet BR. Do you think that would be a B vitamin deficiency? I remember talking about curly toes before in chicks but not in a 9 mo old?

Contractures or curled? new or old?
Definatly a possibility

Tell her to put her on the chick vit in water with raw meat..and see if it is relieved in a few days..

Usually if it is this old and starting ...it is something else

I did recommend trying liver but I was clear to tell her that I wasn't sure what she was dealing with. A bunch of folks tried giving her all kinds of herbal remedies but I'm thinking that probably isn't going to accomplish anything toward finding the root issue.

This is what she originally wrote:

Quote: We showed her bumblefoot to be sure it wasn't the issue and she said that's not what it is. I'm going to send her a link to here so she can read what folks may have to say.

So I am for anything that "infuses" butter into something! Check out this totally different take on scrambling eggs. I am willing to totally give it a try! Tried some other recipies of theirs, and it's been spot on~

I always cook my eggs with butter and milk! LOL! I also add a bit of shredded sharp cheddar over the top of them toward the end of cooking just to let it melt down into the eggs. My husband and boys LOVE the eggs this way :)

The red is not necessarily from leg mites. The slightly raised scales could be. Treating them will not harm them. If they have leg mites it is very minor. The pink tint to the feet is part hormonal and breed and not a concern unless it accompanys raised scales.

Oh ok. I can't tell the scales are raised. So do u think spraying the roosting bar and the bedding will be sufficient to help with the mites? We don't handle the chickens, so if I don't have to put the nu stock on them that would be great. We just started today in trying to have our daughter sit with some BOSS to get them used to her. They seem to listen to her best, so my hope was to get them to let her pick them up over time.

Glad I finnally asked, the chickens with scaly mites have such ugly feet it can't feel good.

Quote: Chickens are not agressive animals. At night time go out to the coop and pick them up. They will be fine. They enjoy being stroked on the back of the neck and on the chest. They might squack and flap until you get comfortable handling them.

Do you know how to pick up a chicken?

I don't even think about handling a chicken, so, I might not explain it right. It just comes second nature.
