The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I have a question for the seasoned cullers.

What is the longest you've ever seen a bird spasm for after death?

I culled a 10 week old pullet this weekend, and since she was just such a small bird, I took her head right off. She flopped around for a good 2-3 minutes, though definitely dead. I have never seen them flop that much, and was wondering if it is an indicator of something? I believe she was having neurological problems, which was the reason of the cull.

She flopped around a lot for a couple of minutes, stopped and then did it again. It was very weird.

The NN hen I culled barely flopped at all. Maybe 2 -5 seconds.

We had a decapitated guinea go on for what seemed like 3-4 minutes. That particular guinea always did have a flair for the dramatic!

Well I'm glad that it's happened to someone else. It was unnerving! It makes you second guess yourself... but her head was off.. :p

Yes - and when ever we thought it was done, we'd touch it and it would start up again!

not unusual. I've had a few that insisted on covering me with blood after the head removal. Some turkeys I've killed seemed to flop forever. 2 to 5 seconds. Geez wish they all flopped that little

Wanted to let everyone know Outsidepride.com is having a 20% off ground cover sale right now. I've already got my clover and sweet pea vines for the chicken run. I think I'm going to throw the clover down at the end of Febuary, and we'll start the vines along the ouside of the run in March.
Just noticed, while typing this, there's an Ad for articficial grass....on a chicken site? Odd.
Thank you !! I just ordered some seeds and clover was one of them but was thinking to order some more.....& seet pea vines intrigue me so I think I will get some of those as well. Tho I dont think I can plant as early as you since we can get snow thru April

That could very well be. My silkies will sneeze for a couple minutes after I do that. They are the only ones I have to fork around litter for, as the rest do it themselves. They are separate, so it's a must.

The litter is so deep in the silkie pen. I love it :D
All the Silkies seem to love the DL. The chicks wallow in it like piggies. After five hours the guy with the loud breathing has quieted. I can barely hear it now. <enter big sigh of relief!>
I don't know if it's because of the olive oil I put down his throat or he cleared his lungs on his own. I'm thinking I will take him out of the barn and put him on the grass while I turn the litter in his pen from now on. I'd rather he got a bit wet than choke to death. Eventually all my Silkies will run together. It's soon time I played yard tetris with my flocks. My hubby is already talking about another hoop coop next to the turkey one.
