The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

You just reminded me of a question I was wondering about. Can hatching eggs bring things into your flock? I mean, can the chicks that subsequently hatch from those eggs carry diseases? There are many times on BYC I have heard similar stories about people bringing in adult birds from somewhere, and Armageddon of diseases break loose. Makes me think I would never want to bring in an adult bird.

I honestly don't know about Mareks and eggs from birds that are carriers. There are a number of nasty diseases of poultry that can leave survivors and they remain carriers for life. If Mareks gets into your flock you can have devastating losses. Birds will be survivors but will infect any new birds or chicks you bring on to your property. Maybe someone else knows first hand knowledge about Mareks, NewCastle, and if it affects eggs? There is lots of information to google but first hand knowlege is best in my opinion.

One more point about the electric fencing or maybe two or three...

I also plan to get a propane weed burner for weed control.... before I put up the fence ;) It's natural and lasts longer I think.
That's a great idea! I wonder if you could just use a regular hand-held tank? I've never seen the weed burner before. I'll have to look that one up.

What did you miss?? A detailed conversation about culling, a bunch of information on electric fences, loanwizard in a loincloth, Stony went off topic and some cruddy weather throughout much of the continental US. Aside from that, not much...

We went from 60 degrees this morning to 19 degrees by 6:00 am tomorrow. It's currently 29 (after having been 60). How is a little bird to acclimate to that kind of change!

I just put our orphan LF and wife's Silkie chicks out in the tractor today. They were ok during the day with 52* but now it is below 45* which is 20* less than they are used to. So I have a small clamp light with a 60W bulb out there and am going to wean them off that over the next week, then they will be fine.
