The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Stoney, was he lying on his back/side when you first found him? I've read that a heart attack will cause (in this case) the chicken to fall on his back.
side. I don't have any idea if it happened on the roost or on the floor. Therefore I can't make a determination as to how he would fall.

never seen a poison snake here, ever.Lived on this land my entire 45 years. Poison snakes are extremely rare here in this part of NY. Way north of us are timber rattlers and east of us in Mass are some, but not many copperheads.

I was waiting for you to chime in. I guess I better get warming that water. Pics...doubt it. Work by myself, bloody hands, camera, don't mix well.

Will a bad heart be obvious Delisha?

Chiming in late - just got home...

Sorry for your loss, Stony!
There won't be snakes this time of year - they'll all still be hibernating.
A heart attack would not have any obvious signs you could see during a necropsy - it would only be detectable by a blood test - but not worth it. If everything looks OK on the inside (no parasites, everything's the right color, shape and texture), I would eat the meat. Heart failure is a likely cause and not bad for the meat.

So these are just Willow Branches cut and stuck into the soil, and they grow from that?
Hey Trav! Welcome back from Hawaii!

And yes. You and I live in a climate where you can stick branches of many plants into moist soil and they will root and grow. Our rains come on a regular enough basis to keep them alive. The willow family is a large one. Called Salix. Depending on the variety, this kind of hedge could become a monster in our climate. The chickens would have a hard time keeping it trimmed. You'd eventually need goats.

Aoxa..

Thanks for posting about the fence..it looks really interesting.. I am going to do some reading on it and see if it would work here. Willow huh? We have willow trees..are theses branches off the willow trees?
I'm not really sure. All I read was that the twigs they planted were dormant.. when they start to grow they root themselves and go all pretty like that. I know that when my nephew was born, my aunt got his mother a flower arrangement that had twigs in it called Parking Willows (my nephew is named Parker, hence her picking them). After they were done with the arrangement, they planted the twigs and it bloomed into a great big tree really quickly. Maybe it's the same kind of concept.

Thanks, Oahu was nice, just to much "big city" for me. We are planning on pigmy goats in the distant future(have to get other 900' of property line fenced first), but in the mean time I have hedge trimmers to keep at bay. I actually could let it be a little overgrown to help keep coyotes from seeing into my back yard. Then they would only have 2 sides to see into it, helping me keep them out.

Does anyone have any tips for relieving whiplash? Darn ice.. I slipped and fell and the pain is very uncomfortable. Can't miss any work, so for anyone that has relieved this with stretches or ice or what.. please chime in. I know off topic. PM me if you wish. Advil is not cutting it. It kind of is chicken related because it was during chores.

If it is only soft tissue damage then alternating heat & cold really helps. Use an ice pack (a dedicated bag of frozen veggies works well) apllied for about 20 minutes, then heat for about 20 minutes. Usually works as well as or better than muscle relaxer pills.
