The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I say you are spot on with all your guesses, other than the Australorp who is definitely a boy.

Another Australorp started crowing this morning, so definitely 2 of them are roosters on top of all the other ones labeled. I called Ideal and they asked me to send photos for proof, so I did. Now I am waiting...

Makes me wonder if someone mixed up the order and thought it was for cockerels instead of pullets.

It does make you wonder - lol. Although I won't be laughing when I have to kill them all this weekend.

It looks like 5 roos and 4 hens from that order that was supposed to be 9 pullets. Out of my silkie straight run, I got 2 roos and 1 hen. 7 roos is a little much!

Look what the kiddos learned to do! (Must be watching mom.) 5.5 Weeks

They have their own canning jar waterer on the other side of the hen house and I never showed them that there was water in these cup waterers.

And...I DID find a way to keep these from freezing in the winter!

I'm going to do a blog post on winter use of the cup waterers when I get some time.
Wow this thread moves fast..

Great waterers! I'd love to have some of those for the big coop. Right now I'm bringing fresh water out to everyone twice daily. It gets heavy and you can't just bring a little or it freezes right up.

I have issues with brooding chick temps too so I try to set up the heat lamp at one end and they can choose warmth or any level in between. So far so good.

Never had young chicks with bloody droppings though, so I cannot comment on that. I have found that the chicks I've brooded with fermented feed and acv in the water have had zero cocci issues. Those that didn't had issues with it, strangely enough.

More pictures..she is showing them the food and water so I do not need to intervene. She is trying to get them out of the box..so by tomorrow they will probably be all over the place. Some hop out and in pretty easy..others are just chicken...ha ha

Okay, here's a natural chicken keeping question....

I ran out of feed and won't have my new bags delivered until Monday. I can't get organic flock raiser mash here and I REALLY don't want to have to get a bag of Purina crumbles... which raises the question, what would I do if I ran out of feed and couldn't ever get any?
Where I live in AZ, at this time of year, it is just bare dirt... no leaves, no green or anything. However, I can supply some greens and I have leftover squash and pumpkin from the garden in storage. I also have some sprout seed and hard red winter wheat seed I can sprout, plus leftover scraps from our meals. Do you think my chickens and 4 ducks could survive on this until Monday or should I just pick up some of that feed until my good feed arrives? I hope to never run out again as I am trying to get an idea on how much they eat and how much I need to order at a time. If you think I can do it without the commercial feed in the middle of winter, what else would you suggest I try to add?

That is a week away..
You sure can get by..sprout the wheat and seeds..scramble up there eggs.add some Oregano...feed some cabbage, kale, spinach, and give them raw meats.
They should be fine till Monday.
